External School Review

During the third week of March, six representatives from the School Board will be at Baltimore School for a period of three days conducting an External Review.  An External Review is a process that all schools are mandated to undertake every 3 to 5 years.  The review includes a thorough assessment of our school from the areas of i) school organization, ii) leadership, iii) teaching and learning, iv) culture and climate and v) school development plan.  Interviews will be conducted with all teaching and support staff, many students and the School Council members.  This review will help us provide the best possible education for our students as we proceed over the next few years.

Grade 9 Parent Meeting

On Thursday, Mar. 18, 2009 @ 6:30pm in the School Library, there is a very important meeting for all parents of grade 9 students.  At this meeting the course selections for Level I will be discussed along with the changes to the Senior High curriculum.  All Grade 9 parents are urged to attend this important meeting.

Pi Day

We will be hosting our annual Pi Day celebrations on March 15, Monday.  Pi Day is normally held on March 14th, however, since March 14th is a Sunday we will be holding this celebration of MATH on March 15.  It will be a day of math competitions, math challenges, and other math activities.  During lunch, all students will be served pie and ice cream.  In the afternoon, we will be having our annual cake auction.  Please support this fundraiser by donating a cake for this day.

50/50 Draw

As part of our ongoing fundraising efforts the second of our 50/50 draws has begun. Students involved in varsity sports will be selling tickets for this effort with the draw date set for March 19th.  Our last 50/50 prize was over $2000 and this time we hope to be even closer to our maximum prize of $3000. All monies raised will be split between school and sports initiatives. Thank you for your co-operation in making this, and all our fundraising efforts a success.

100 Day Celebrations

Reminder

A reminder to students and parents that students participating in extra-curricular activities will not be permitted to wait in the school for extended periods of time.  This is due to the fact there is no supervision available after 3:00pm in the general school area.  The support staff is very busy at that time and the students are at risk.

Scholarship Information

A reminder to grade 12 students and their parents, that there are many scholarship opportunities for students that intend to pursue post-secondary studies next year.  Please contact the Guidance Counsellor, Ms. Gosse, for more information.

Early Dismissals

If your child has an appointment or a valid reason to leave school early, please send a note to school indicating the time that they are being picked up and who is to pick them up.  Due only to sickness or an emergency will students be permitted to call home for an early dismissal.  In the past the number of early dismissals has been quite large, especially on Fridays.  Classes do go ahead as scheduled on Friday afternoons at Baltimore School and parents are strongly encouraged to ensure their children are indeed in class.

TUTORING FOR TUITION

The Tutoring for Tuition program provides Level I, II and III students with the opportunity to obtain a post-secondary tuition voucher by providing tutoring services to students from K-12 in all areas.  Parents/guardians, who feel this service would be beneficial, are asked to submit their child’s name for tutoring assistance to their homeroom teacher or Ms. Gosse (Guidance Counsellor).  Tutoring services are available at the school from 2:45–3:45 Mon thru Thur.

Cell Phone Use

Until this year cell phones have been a non-issue at our school, however, with improved technology we now have cell phone service at the school.  This has created a problem in that student use of the cell phone during class time generated undo distractions to others.  The school policy is that for the first offense, students will have the phone confiscated by the teacher and sent to the office.  The phone will only be returned when a parent/guardian drops by the school to retrieve the cell phone.  The second offense will result in the suspension of the student for one day.  The purpose of this policy is not to enforce punishment, but to ensure the classroom learning environment is safe from disruptions.  Students are encouraged to use their cell phones during recess, lunch and after school.

Career Resource Assistant

Amanda Duggan has been hired as Baltimore High School’s Career Resource Assistant.  She will be working part-time with us and Mobile High School. Her role at the school is to help students with career choices, course selection and post-secondary school information such as scholarships.  Amanda will be with us until June 2010.

French Tutoring

For the next six weeks, Mr. Goodridge will be setting aside an hour at the end of classes (3:00pm-4:00pm) on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to work with junior or senior high school students who would like extra help or practice in French.  Help will be given individually, or in groups, depending on the number of students and the students’ requests.  Please take advantage of this great opportunity.

Heritage Fair

The Heritage Fair will take place on Tuesday, Mar. 30 for Grade 4-9 students.  For more information and to assist students in their project, please visit the following website: http://sites.google.com/site/schulz29/home/heritage-fair

Parent Teacher Interviews

The Kindergarten to Grade 6 Parent/Teacher interviews will take place on Thursday, Mar. 18.  The interview times will be 1:30-4:00pm and 5:00-6:30pm.  All K-Grade 12 students will be dismissed at 12:30pm.  There will be no lunch period during this day.

Parents Dropping off Students at School

To ensure the safety of all students, we ask that parents not drive onto the school parking lot during arrival and dismissal times for students.  No private vehicles are permitted to travel on the road at the rear of the building. Busses are expected to arrive at school at 8:15 in the morning and depart at 2:55 in the afternoon.  For no reason is any vehicle to be parked in the fire lane at the front of the building.  Parents have often neglected this emergency lane as they park there to pick up their child or to drop something off at the general office.  Any vehicle found to be parked in this emergency lane, with a driver still in the vehicle or not, and for any length of time, will be reported to the local RCMP.  The safety of your children is our greatest concern.

French Summer Program

Grade 9 students can apply for a 3 week program at Campus Notre-Dame-de-Foy in Quebec.  The bursary for this program covers tuition, registration fees, room and board, meals and all materials needed for the program.  Deadline is MARCH 26, 2010

Grade 10 students can apply for a 4 week program that runs from July 5 to July 30 at Charles Garnier College in Quebec.  The bursary for this program covers tuition, registration fees, room and board, meals and all materials needed for the program.

Deadline is MARCH 26, 2010

Grade 12 students can apply for the Student Fellowship Program.  The goal of this program is to assist students financially with an opportunity to pursue French language studies within Canada.

Deadline is MARCH 12, 2010.

RECYCLING PROGRAM

Our recycling program is in full swing again this year. Drop off day is Wednesday. We accept the following beverage containers B pop bottles and cans, juice packs, juice bottles, and liquor bottles. We cannot recycle milk containers. Please remove caps and straws from beverage containers and place glass bottles in a box. Recyclables may be dropped off at the front entrance on Wednesday.

Severe Allergies

We have students and teachers with severe allergies at our school. A reaction to certain products and foods could prove to be very harmful for several of our students, and in some cases they could even prove to be fatal.  For this reason the school has been declared free of any source of peanuts, shellfish and all perfumes, aftershaves and colognes.
