Literacy Program

Students from Kindergarten to Grade Six continue to thrive under our Literacy program.  “Bruno’s Reading Roundup” has become a tremendous success and students are accepting the challenge to participate in nightly reading with parents/guardians at home.  Many of our students have already read above and beyond their expected goals. Please ensure our students keep up the great work and continue to receive those prizes.  The next reward level is a new book to be presented next month.

Course Selection Sheets for Next Year

We are presently beginning our scheduling for next year.  All students in grades 9, 10 and 11 have been given course selection sheets.  These sheets need to be completed, signed by a parent and handed in to Ms. Gosse by this coming Friday.  If you have questions or concerns with course offerings for next year, please contact the school at 432-2090.

Varsity Sports Committee

Varsity sports have a huge role in the lives of students at Baltimore School; our gym is in use every evening as well as on weekends by the various teams and programs offered within our building.  In order to run such a high quality sports program, and offer students the opportunity to participate at regional and provincial levels, a great deal of fundraising and organization is required.  For example, over the  past several weeks, the Varsity Committee has hosted the Grade 6 Boys Provincial and the Grade 8 Boys Provincial Tournaments, both a huge success.  Besides the Committee, the support from the community itself has been tremendous. We have had parents from the area volunteering even though their kids did not participate in these tournaments.  We also received many many positive comments with respect to a well organized tournament and the wonderful hospitality.  For those who would still like to get involved and help out, we are hosting two more tournaments next month.  Paula Battcock or Theresa Chidley are the contact people for the Varsity Sports Committee.

Cake Auction

Thanks to all the students and parents who donated cakes to this years Spirit Week Cake Auction.  A total of $548 was raised for Student Leadership.

A Tremendous Thank You

Over the past year Baltimore School has benefitted greatly from the support of the Community Youth Network (CYN).  CYN has provided money for travel for our students and they have also organized events for youth.  Most recently they provided the school with $500 to help pay for the buses during our Activity Day on March 18.  They also provided us with a grant for $4050 for afterschool bussing which allowed our students to stay after school on Tuesday to participate in a wide range of activities.

Beginning a Tradition

A huge thank you to Ms. Natalie Brazil for hopefully beginning a new tradition of having a St. Patrick’s Day Concert at the school.  This year the concert included performances by Charlie Dunne, Maxine Dunne, Kyle Dalton, Anna Kenny, Janice Hopkins, Gabriella Nolander, Trevor Dunne, Doug Dunne, Rick Dunne, Emily Kenny, Robyn Kenny and Kelsey Hopkins.  Next year we hope to grow this concert and see more local entertainment on St. Patrick’s Day for our students.

Head Lice

The head lice seem to have made a re-appearance. It is still very important for parents to be vigilante in checking their children’s heads on a regular basis.  A presentation on what to look for and how to treat head lice can be viewed on the School District’s website.

Lost and Found

There is a tremendous amount of clothes in our lost and found bins.  Much of the clothes is new and in very good condition.  We will keep the clothes until the end of this week and on Monday of next week, it will be sent to the NL Diabetic Association.

Far North

On Thursday, March 24 the grade 8’s spent a day in the woods simulating what it would have been like for Gabe and Raymond, two characters in Will Hobb’s novel Far North, to survive in the wilderness. This cross-curricular project provided the students with a unique opportunity to apply information learned in language, health/physical education, and technology. The day started with each group gathering logs and boughs for the construction of their lean-to which they had designed in technology class. Next came the building of their fire for lunch - this was a challenge for some but with assistance of Mr. Foley or Mr. Matchem they soon had it conquered. Water for tea was boiled in a tin can over an open flame, bannock was fired in a pan or rolled around a stick and cooked over an open flame, herring was roasted in tin foil, and beans were warmed in a tin. It was a feast fit for a king! Mr. Hobbs would have been proud. By all accounts the students thoroughly enjoyed the day away from the classroom – they worked well together, were well-behaved, and many were hoping that they would have an opportunity to do a similar project sometime in the future.

Activity Tuesdays

Today, Tuesday March 29th is the final day for Activity Tuesdays.  The funding for the afterschool bussing has been used.  The Grant provided by CYN has allowed the school to offer bussing for afterschool activities for 16 weeks.  We are in the process of making application for this grant once again next year.  Many thanks to all the staff who gave of their time in order to make this a success.

Basketball Tournament

This upcoming weekend will be a very busy one at the school.  The Grade 9 Girls Basketball Provincials will be hosted at Baltimore over Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
