Newfoundland Youth Symphony Orchestra

On Sunday, March 19 the NYSO performed at Baltimore School.  It was a tremendous performance by very talented young people.  Our very own Elizabeth Fahey is a member of this orchestra and we were very proud to have the opportunity to hear Elizabeth and her bandmates perform at the school.

Tiffany Maher, Leslie Kavanagh and Adam Kavanagh

These three students were selected from thousands of applicants from across this country to attend the Forum for Young Canadians held in Ottawa.  The students left this past weekend and will be in Ottawa for a week.  Tiffany, Leslie and Adam are very deserving of this honour and we wish them a very successful week.

School Website

A reminder to all our parents that our school website can be accessed at www.k12.nf.ca/baltimore

All upcoming tests are posted on this site and it is updated regularly thanks to Mr. Pender.

Easter Break

Easter break begins Friday, April 14 and the students will return to school on Monday, April 24.  The administration wishes to thank all students and staff for a very successful year to date and we wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Easter break.

Arts Smarts

Our ArtsSmarts project, “From an Island to an Island,” will start next week, March 27.  All parents should have received a letter providing an overview of the project.  Anyone with questions or concerns may contact their child’s teacher.

Heritage Fair

On April 5th, 2006, Baltimore School will hold our 2nd Annual Heritage Fair.  This year the fair will include grades 4-9.  The purpose of this fair is to allow students the opportunity to explore the history of our province and to celebrate our unique Newfoundland culture.

The theme this year will be, “If These Walls Could Talk”.  Last year Baltimore sent two wonderful representatives to the Regional Fair and placed in the Top 10.  Quite an accomplishment for our first try!  What wonders will this year’s fair produce?  The sky is the limit!

Since the support from the community was so overwhelming last year and not everyone had the chance to see all the magnificent projects, we are having extended hours of viewing. Parents are invited to view the projects from 1:45 – 2:30 and from 6:30 – 8:00 that evening.  Students are expected to return at 6:30 to display their projects and stay for the awards presentations.  We will have the presentation of awards for each grade and the three overall school awards during the evening session.  Loyola Sullivan has graciously agreed to come and view the projects and to present the awards to our students. It promises to be an exciting day!

Junior High Speak -Off

On April 3, 2006, Baltimore School will hold our Junior High Speak - Off.  It will take place periods 4&5 in the cafeteria and parents are encouraged to attend.  The winner of the speak off will represent our school in the District Speak - Off in April.  Good Luck to the finalists!

Under 12 Basketball

Congratulations to the Grade 6 girls for their great effort in the St. Bernard's Girl's Basketball Tournament held on March 10th-11th in Witless Bay.  The girls won their first game against Roncali School, but were defeated by Witless Bay and Newtown.  Michaela Brophy was named player of the first game, Maggie O'Toole was the player of the second game with Amanda Kavanagh being named player of the third game.

A job well done girls!  You played hard and should be very pleased with yourselves.

Boys 3A Hockey

Baltimore’s Boys Hockey team took part in the 3A regional playoffs over the weekend of  March 15-18 in Mobile. The tournament included teams from Bell Island, Trepassey, Torbay as well as the host team from Mobile Central High. Going into the final round robin game against Bell Island our boys, lead by solid goaltending and a great defensive core were tied for second place. Goals were hard to come by and we dropped a close game to Bell Island and had to settle for third place. Our boys played very well and  Coach Sullivan was very proud of the effort and composure they displayed through out the tournament. The  team would like to thank Mr. D. Matchem  for his time and enthusiasm as he got behind the bench for all the games. Members of the team include Luke Sullivan, Tyler Ryan, Peter Kavanagh, Greg Sullivan, Dustin Hartery, Nicholas Croft, Chris Chidley, Adam Kavanagh, Scott Drew, Stephan Parsons, Stefan Jones, Bryan Costello, Larry Carey, Steven Swain, Blake Kavanagh, Darryl Swain, Jason Power, Aaron Hayden, Dennis Croft and Bradley Coady¼¼thanks a lot, boys!
