The procedure administration will adhere to is as follows.
We
closely monitor the forecast for the early morning. An assessment is
made on whether the
conditions are suitable for the opening of school at regular time.
When uncertain, a call is made to
the local Department of Highways. Contact is also made with our bus
contractor, Mr. Tom Carey.
Based upon information gathered from both, along with forecasts and
local conditions, a decision
is made on school opening. Only under the most severe conditions
will a decision be made to
close school for an entire morning. Usually a call is made to VOCM
for an update at either 9:00 or
10:00, depending on the predictions of how long the unsuitable
conditions will last. If conditions
do not improve an update will be carried on the radio later in the
day, with the last update being at
12:00. In the event that an update is carried at 12:00 school will
be opening at 1:00 with no lunch
period.
Calls to VOCM for updates are made at least a half hour before the
scheduled update time.
Faxes to VOCM follow the phone contact. The school can in no way
control when the radio
station announces these updates. Requests are made for a certain
time and the announcer fits them
in at times possible in the scheduled programming. The school
regrets that this is inconvenient for
parents when the update is made later than expected, but we have no
control on this matter. All
parents may not be satisfied with school decisions on whether to
open for classes or not, but you
must remember that all decisions are judgment calls made with the
best interests of your
children’s safety and education in mind. Parents do have the right
to keep their children home if
their personal judgment call differs with that of school
administration. Closures/delayed openings are an inconvenience for us all. Please understand that we try to make the best decisions for everyone involved in these cases.
