Hillier's Ultramar

Hillier’s Ultramar in St. Lunaire-Griquet opened in 1975 and was owned and operated by Allan Hillier.

Allan was in his late twenties when he decided that he was tired of not having a steady job and was always having to search to get job.

He didn’t get much of his education as he left school before he graduated and he didn’t bother to attend any post- secondary schooling. He left high school to help out his family with living expenses. But Allan still had the willpower necessary to become an entrepreneur.

Allan raised his eight children and supported his wife on his own income. As his children grew up and completed high school some of them went to college and got training as mechanics. Allan employed five of his own children and they became a family-oriented business with very few employees outside of his family.

Years later he expanded his business to carry a professional collision specialist, which was his eldest son, Bob. His sons, Gary and Scott, work as mechanics, his son ,Lawrence, delivers oil to the public and his daughter ,Joann, keeps the accounting part of the business in order.

In September of 2001, Allan felt that it was time  to retire and pass on his business to his youngest son, Gary Hillier.

Gary is only a young man in his mid-twenties as he starts out in the business world. He worked in the family business for many years and now manages the business.

Since Gary took over the responsibility of the garage, he has made a little expansion to the business by adding a little convenience center selling chips, bars, and drink , etc. He is still in the process of expanding.

At the current time he employs nine workers and occasionally Allan himself is seen working there.

Gary and Allan both agree that starting out on your own is very difficult and that it takes a lot of hard work and dedication in order to keep a business afloat.

Hillier’s Ultramar has been in business for approximately 27 years and is still running strong and satisfying customers.
