Ruth's Beauty Salon

Ruth Earle got her motivation to start her own business, a beauty salon, because she felt that there was no other beauty related services in her community and because she was unemployed and could not find a job.

She started out in a small room in the local fire hall, working alone because her business only had approximately thirty customers in the first year, 1986. Ruth says " the hardest thing about starting your own business is trying to get clientele, because people always went to other hair stylist in surrounding communities". Building up the clients trust was a big factor for Ruth to overcome.

In 1991, Ruth opened her own beauty salon, business picked up and at one point in time she was employing four workers to help with the large amount of consumers that were starting to develop. But in 1992, when the fishery moratorium came into effect, people were forced to move away to look for work and business slowed down. Ruth was forced to lay off two employees in order to keep her business alive.

In 1995, tanning became a big consumer demand, so she took it upon herself to invest in tanning equipment and she then offered that service to her clients. Waxing was also very popular so she offered that to her customers as well.

Ruth decided that a fitness center in the area would be of benefit to her customers. So in January of 2002 she decided to expand and build a toning and fitness center adjacent to her beauty salon.

At the current time Ruth employs Lori Compton, along with herself as hairstylist. Dino Earle, her son, manages the toning and fitness center while her daughter, Della, works there part time.

Ruth says maybe one day when something is in great demand she may expand to offer another service, but as for now she is quite content with the service she offers to the public.

She also says that owning your own business requires a lot of time and very much dedication in order to make your business a success. Success never comes unless your willing to take chances.
