General Information

Bayview Regional Collegiate is located in the small community of St.Lunaire, on the northern tip of Newfoundland. The school has 155 students and 13 teachers attending there. Students from the surrounding communities, such as Griquet, Quirpon, Gunner's Cove, Noddy Bay, Straitsview, Hay Cove and L'Anse-aux-Meadows also attend this school. The total population of this area is approximately 1350 people.
Most families in this area have an historical connection to then fishery. However, since 1992, the
Snow bank on Northern Peninsula
ground fishery, and, in particular, the cod fishery, has been closed. Since that time, the fishermen in this area has participated in the crab, shrimp, and seal fishery.
Even though we are further south than Iceland, our climate is cooler. We experience a marine type of climate and are greatly influenced by the cold Labrador Current. This current gives us cool and usually wet summers and cold winters with lots of snow. Our average annual precipitation is approximately 850mm.
On average, our July temperature is 12oC and our January temperature is -10oC.
The students at our school do not have a great deal of knowledge about Iceland, but we hope that this will change with the help of the GrassRoots Project. We are especially interested in learning about Iceland because Icelandic companies are involved in setting up a shrimp processing plant in the nearby community of St. Anthony. Many people in this area are hoping to find employment in this plant.
