Recap of Term’s Special Events and
Extracurricular '06-'07
On September 27th, 2006, our Theatre
Arts and Senior High Language Arts students attended the play, “The
Known Soldier”, at the Arts and Culture Center in Gander.
On September 27th, 2006, Phoenix
Academy and the Public Library held its Official Opening Ceremony.
Nearly 300 people attended and were entertained by our Grade 3 - 6
choirs and a number of guest speakers.
On September 29th, 2006, our K-6
students participated in the Terry Fox Walk. Approximately 120
students raised over $2600.00 for Cancer Research.
On Saturday, September 30th, 2006,
Mr. Brian Coombs and the Senior Boys Softball team participated in
the Regional Softball Tournament at Twillingate. The boys were
great ambassadors for our school and competed in a very
sportsmanlike manner.
On October 4th, 2006, students in
Grades 7, 8 and 9 attended and participated in a district wide
Festival of Sport Track and Field Meet at Smallwood Academy, Gambo.
On October 12th, 2006, students in
Grades 8 began participating in the Junior High Level D.A.R.E.
Program. This is a cooperative effort between the school and the
RCMP, which brings awareness to drugs and their effects in the
classroom. The program will be facilitated by Cpl. Larry Turner in
conjunction with our Grade 8 teacher, Ms. Cooper.
During the weekend of October 13th -
14th, 2006, Mr. Ted Goodyear and the Senior Boys
Volleyball Team attended the Subway Classic Invitational Tournament
in Clarenville and won the ‘Silver’ medal. Twenty teams competed in
the tournament.
On October 18th, 2006, the Student
Council organized a Movie Presentation (ie. Brother Bear 2) for the
K-6 students after school.
On October 20th, 2006, the K-6
students participated in a QDPA (ie. Quality Daily Physical
Activity) session as an initiative to raise money for our School
Breakfast Program. The event resulted in nearly $300.00 being
raised for the program.
On October 20th & 21st,
2006, our school hosted the Robbie West Memorial Invitational
Volleyball Tournament. Our Senior Boys Volleyball Team captured
First Place. As well, the Senior Girls Volleyball Team participated
in the Alex D. Mouland Memorial Invitational Volleyball Tournament
at Gill Memorial Academy in Musgrave Harbour.
On October 24th, 2006, the Student
Council organized a Halloween dance for the students in the
evening. There were a number of items collected that night and
donated to the local Food Bank as students were asked to bring a
non-perishable food item as a part of their admission.
During the weekend of October 27th -
28th, 2006, Mr. Ted Goodyear and the Senior Boys
Volleyball Team attended an invitational tournament in St. John’s
known as Volley Fest and won First Place. This was a province wide
tournament with teams participating from all around the island, not
to mention, some teams from the Maritime provinces.
On October 27th, 2006, K-3 students,
teachers and parents participated in Round Robin Literacy Centers at
the school. The theme was Halloween and parents were invited to
take turns reading to students, creating artwork, etc... and of
course, there were treats as well.
On October 30th, 2006, the
Carmanville Crime Prevention Team designed a “Haunted House” set at
the Carmanville RCMP detachment and invited our K-3students and
teachers to attend and be frightened. A good time was had by all.
On October 31st, 2006, Mr. Bob Kelly
and the Senior High Drama Class designed a “Spook Trail” for the K-9
students. Drama Students designed a set and dressed in costume that
of course, revolved around a Halloween theme.
During the weekend of November 3rd -
4th, 2006, Mr. Ted
Goodyear and the Senior Boys Volleyball Team attended the Pepsi
Invitational Tournament in Gander and won First Place. Again, this
was a province wide tournament with teams participating from all
around the island.
On November 9th, 2006, teachers and
students helped package up 50 Christmas Shoe Boxes for Operation
Christmas Child. The school also collected approximately $82.00 to
be donated to this worthy cause. Items were donated and collected by
students, teachers, parents and other community members. Honourable
mention goes to the Chantal Hodder, Laura Bown, Samantha Russell,
Jeremy Brinson, Troy Angell, Ms. Linda Bailet and Ms. Deanne Walsh
who made a significant contribution to this cause.
On November 10th, 2006,
students, teachers, parents and special invited guests
attended Remembrance Day ceremonies at Phoenix Academy. Students
(K-12) and teachers organized and participated in the event.
During the weekend of November 17th
- 18th, 2006, Ms. Sheena Jackman, Ms. Heidi Cooper, Ms.
Madonna White and the Senior Girls Volleyball Team attended an
Invitational Volleyball Tournament in Glenwood. The girls won Third
Place and were great ambassadors for our school and competed in a
very sportsmanlike manner.
During the weekend of November 18th,
2006, Mr. Ted Goodyear and the Senior Boys Volleyball Team attended
the 4A Regional Volleyball Tournament in Gander. The top teams from
the region participated and once again, our team came away with
First Place and the right to represent our region in the upcoming
Provincials on December 1st, 2006.
During the weekend of November 24 th
- 25th, 2006, Ms. Sheena Jackman, Ms. Heidi Cooper, Ms.
Madonna White and the Senior Girls Volleyball Team attended the Regional
Volleyball Tournament in Eastport. The girls played well and were great
ambassadors for our school.
Between November 27 - December 1st,
2006, the school held its annual Book Fair. Students and parents were
invited and encouraged to visit the school library to examine and
perhaps purchase a wide variety of literature. Honourable mention goes
to Mr. Craig Hicks who made a significant contribution to organizing and
operating the Fair.
On the weekend of December 1st & 2nd,
2006, Mr. Ted Goodyear and the Senior Boys Volleyball Team attended the
4A Provincial Volleyball Tournament in Clarenville. The top teams from
the province participated and once again our team came away with First
Place and brought home the Provincial Banner.
During the weekend of December 8th - 9th,
2006, Ms. Sheena Jackman, Ms. Heidi Cooper, Ms. Madonna White, Mr.
Brooks Bath and the Junior and Senior Girls Volleyball Teams hosted an
Invitational Volleyball Tournament at the school in Carmanville. The
Senior Girls team came away with First Place. Both our Junior and
Senior girls’ teams were great ambassadors for our school and competed
in a very sportsmanlike manner.
On December 13th, 2006, the Student
Council organized a Movie Presentation (ie. Garfield 2) for the K-6
students after school.
On Thursday, December 14th, 2006,
Phoenix Academy held
its Christmas Concert in the school gymnasium at 6:30 p.m.. Students,
parents and other community members were entertained by a variety of
Christmas Song and Dance. Honourable mention goes to Mr.
Roger Bungay who made a significant contribution to organizing and
operating the concert.
On Wednesday, December 20th,
2006, Mr. Kelly and his
Drama Troupe performed the Christmas Play, “Whatever Happened To Good
Old Ebenezer Scrooge” for students in the school’s theatre.
On the
weekend of January 19, Mr. Bath, Paul Easton, Ryan Ellsworth,
Junior boys and girls volleyball team took part in the Pepsi
Tournament in Gander. The Junior Girls took home gold and the Junior
boys took home silver. Both teams were great ambassadors for our
school and competed in a very sportsmanlike manner.
On February 12, 2007, Mrs. Linda Bailet,
Chantal Hodder and Kayla Eveliegh attended the Live Healthy,
Learn Well conference in Gander. Subsequently, the student
council applied for and received $510 in funding to promote healthy
eating in our school. As a result the student council is preparing
fruit and vegetable trays for distribution in home room classes and
has also began a contest whereby students “caught” eating healthy
will be eligible to win a prize
On February 14, 2007, (ie. Valentine’s Day),
the school held a K-6 dance in the late afternoon with a canteen and
prizes. Later that evening, the Student Council held a Cabaret for
grades 7-12 students. Students were treated to punch; provided a hot
turkey supper that was prepared and served by teachers; entertained
by student council and other students; and ended the evening with a
dance.
On the
weekend of February 19 - 21, 2007, Ms. Deanne Walsh and the Grade 6
Intensive Core French class attended French Camp at the Lion Max
Simms’ Camp on the Bay D’espoir Highway. A special thank you goes
out to Corporal Larry Turner who attended and helped out as a parent
chaperon.
On the
weekend of February 23 - 24, 2007, Ms. Deanne Walsh and the Senior
Boys Basketball Team attended an Invitational Basketball Tournament
in Lethbridge. The boys were great ambassadors for our
school and competed in a very sportsmanlike manner.
In February, the Student Council raised over
$50 in support of AIDs research by selling Heart-o-Grams.
On March 2,
2007, Phoenix Academy held its Winter Carnival celebration. The
K-6 students spent the morning at Carmanville Pond and participated in a
number of winter activities (ie. sliding, ice-fishing, etc...) and were
entertained with a movie in the school’s theatre during the afternoon.
The 7-12 students participated in a number of indoor and outdoor
activities throughout the day, including a snow sculpture contest, a
creative snowman contest, lumberjack race, snowshoe races and various
gym games. As well, the student council made and sold hot chocolate and
turkey soup during the day and helped prepare and serve the hot
dog/drinks provided by the school for lunch.
On March 6,
2007, Ms. Deanne Walsh and the Senior Boy’s Basketball Team attended the
Regional Basketball Tournament in Glenwood. Once again, the boys
competed in a very sportsmanlike manner and proudly represented Phoenix
Academy throughout the tournament.
On March 8,
2007, members of our school choir were joined by choir members of Gill
Memorial Academy, Musgrave Harbour, to perform in the Kiwanis Music
Festival in Gander. They called themselves the Hamilton Sound Singers
and received many positive comments from the adjudicators including,
"You are exhibiting the true meaning of singing."
On March 9,
2007, Ms. Deanne Walsh and the Grade Six Intensive Core French class
hosted a “Café” for parents.
On March 16, 2007, the student council organized a
“Wear Green” contest to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. This contest was
won by the grade 11 class and were rewarded ice cream treats for their
class participation.
On March 28, 2007, Mr. Kelly’s Theatre class, Mr.
Smith’s Level I English class and the Junior High Drama Troupe attended
the play, “No Man’s Land” at the Arts and Culture Center in
Gander.
Note: Once again, I would like to extend
a special thank you to Parents and Teachers who have supported and
volunteered their time throughout these events. Without you many of
these activities would not be possible!
