Australia is located in Southeastern part of Asia. The northern third of Australia lies in the tropics. The rest of the country lies south of the tropics. On the north of Australia, you would find the Timor Sea, the Arafura Sea and the Torres Strait. On the eastern part of Australia is the Coral Sea and the Tasmania Sea. The Bass Strait and the Indian Ocean are to the south. On the west you find the Indian Ocean.
The climate of Australia is different from region to region. In Australia the climate is tropical in the south. The southern part of the continent has four distinct seasons. Winter, the wettest and coolest season in Australia lasts from June though August. Seasons in Australia are the reverse of those in the northern hemisphere.
The first people to live in Australia were called Aborigines. The first European settlement by British convicts occurred in 1788 at Botany Bay. Southeastern Australia is made up of six state. They are New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia. It also includes two territories. The Western Territory and the Northern Territory.
