South America

South America is located near the equator and the Tropic of Capricorn.  Some of South America is located in the Northern Hemisphere.  However, most of South America is located in the Southern Hemisphere.  The continent  reaches from the Caribbean Sea to the north and to Cape Horn on the South.

South America has a wide variety of climates.  They range from the dry, desert conditions of  Northern Chile, to the heavy rains along the windswept southern coast of the continent.  In general, however, most of the continent has mostly warm weather the year around.  Most of South America receives lots of rain.  Coastal Peru and Northern Chile are among the driest places on earth.

South America is the fourth largest of the earth's seven continents.  The continent extends about 7400 km.  In 1993, the estimated population was 310 million.  The continent is made up of 12 nations.

El Nino (Spanish for the child)  usually happens around Christmas.  It's name refers to the Christ Child.  El Nino creates changes in the atmosphere that leads to heavy downpours in usually dry region.  It also disrupts marine life, hunting, and the local fishing industry.

In this project, we found information about location, climate, and some interesting facts.  We enjoyed doing this group project and would like to do another one soon.
