Under the direction of Mme O'Dell and Mme White a portion of our grades 4,5, and 6 students have taken on the responsibility of growing and maintaining various plants in our Greenhouse.
They are also responsible for taking care of the various plants planted in our outdoor gardens. These include such vegetables as cabbage, carrots, turnip, zucchini, pumpkins, as well as strawberries and various perennial flower gardens.
The Green Thumbs also meet regularly to discuss environmental issues such as Climate Change and how they can do their part to help minimize greenhouse gases. They also take a leadership role in educating our student body on these issues through their bulletin board displays and during school assemblies.
On November 4, 2010 the Green Thumbs Club at CC Loughlin School made hypertufa pots with Jim Taylor, representing Forests without Borders. Forests without Borders is a non-profit charitable organisation operated by the Canadian Institute of Forestry. Forests without Borders works with existing non-government organizations to deliver the skills, knowledge and tools that enable poor communities around the world to meet their challenges related to restoring their forests and the many benefits people obtain from their forests. One of the goals is to help communities achieve long-term sustainable use of their basic natural resources. These pots were sold at our Christmas Craft fair along with tree planting kits.
