THE CANADIAN HALF PINTS VISIT MIDDLE SCHOOL
The Canadian Half Pints basketball stars may not have won their basketball game against the talented middle school players, but the message "Don’t Tease" was received by the students. The leader of the group talked about his uncomfortable school experiences and on how everyone has a talent to be discovered.
WEATHER CENTRAL - SCHOOL CLOSURE UPDATE
The Eastern School District has a weather central site to inform parents, via the internet, with instant updates regarding school openings, delays or closures due to weather. School principals will post the latest information and within minutes it is available for all to see. Check out the site at
www.esdnl.ca and click on status central. Select the school or school system you wish weather information on , i.e. Clarenville School System, and you have the latest update. Also, Environment Canada’s site for up to date weather information can be accessed in the ‘quick links’ box.
MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS ATTEND PROVINCIAL VOLLEY FEST
Our middle school girls played great at Provincial VolleyFest this past weekend in St. John’s. Under the coaching of Ms. Waye and Mr. Walsh, the young squad had fun and competed well at the grade 9 and under tournament. Losing to St. Paul’s of St. John’s in the play-off round they showed good skill and promise for future development. The coaching staff are excited about future tournaments. Representing our great school were:
| Carol Avery | Erin Tilley | Sara Avery |
|
| Katie Walsh | Mykala Pardy | Zoe Price | |
| Stephanie Gunness | Katie Hawkins | Alysha Avery | |
| Caroline Matthews | Alexa Thorne |
Also note: Andrew Upshall and Josh Ennis played with the powerful High School grade 9 boys team in provincial play this weekend in St. John’s and defeated Villa Nova of Conception Bay South ‘2 games to 0' in the championship game capturing the banner. Our Grade 8 team from last year again took the 12 team division. Great job to two talented middle school athletes.
CROSS-WALK SAFETY
On Tuesday Oct. 19th one of our young grade 4 students, Garrett Hiscock, was attempting to cross our cross walk directly in front of our school at 8:20 a.m. and stood waiting for traffic to stop for approximately 1 minute. Several vehicles had not noticed Garrett and passed by without stopping as he stood on the shaded white blocks. We would ask all those parents and friends driving across our parking lot to be extremely cognizant of our young students at the crosswalks and also to our students to never assume that approaching vehicles see you. Do as Garret did and wait for the traffic to come to a complete stop. Way to go Garrett!
TIDBITS
Did you Know: (supplied by Mitchell Lane - 7N) ‘Why was 6 afraid of 7?’ Because it was reported that ‘7 - 8 (ate) - 9' . Ha! Keep them coming.
Middle School Cross -Country Runners participate in Provincials this past weekend! Way to go to the Middle School cross-country runners representing our school: Nathan Baker , Alexandra Doyle , Taylor Harding, Lucas Goobie , Nicholas Hann , Lucas Slade , Andrew Smith , Jared Harding, Brandon Reid , Adam Vey , Melanie Soper , Brett LeDrew , Lyndon Goobie , Kenneth Neil and Shawna Humby. Much thanks to coach Ledrew (Claire’s & Brett’s dad) for making it all possible and for his unwavering commitment to our school’s cross-country club!
RECENT STUDENT "WAY TO GO’S"
The following items were published in the daily morning bulletin. The intention is to celebrate the many wonderful student actions and deeds that occur in and outside our school. We have much to be proud of !
Way to go: to Justin and Jamie Fudge for assisting Ms. Roberts at last weekend’s Flea Market here at the school. Also, to Alex Doyle who assisted the caretakers yesterday in the lunchroom without being asked. Great Middle School behaviour from our young student!!
Way to go: to the 21 students who attended the Drama Workshop on Saturday Oct. 23rd at Heritage Collegiate. Your behaviour and attitude were exemplary. Special thanks to Ms. Walsh (Katie’s mom) for volunteering her time for this wonderful day. ALSO, a great big thank-you to Ms. Pye who so graciously gave of her time to plan and attend the session with you. Her time and dedication to the students made it all possible! Kudos Ms. Pye!!
Way to go : to Lester Drover for carrying the projector up the stairs for Ms. Waye on Tuesday. Thanks for volunteering Lester! A great middle school deed. Also, to Heather Drake who stayed behind on Monday of this week to assist the caretakers after lunch by pushing chairs in their rightful places. Great behaviours from our school!
Way To Go: to Claude Vivian and Garrett Holloway who were a great support to Mr. Randell and Mr. Newell in restoring the gym and lunchroom to original condition on Thursday past. Sir was quite impressed guys!!
LABEL STUDENT ITEMS
Please place your child’s name on all personal items. In the lunchroom on Tuesday October 12th we were able to return lunch bags to those containing student names such as Nathan Green, Mitchell Price, Christopher Duffett and Mykala Pardy. Without the names, the process of recovery is much more difficult!
SCHOOL VENDING MACHINE
We have at our gym entrance a snack vendor where snack items may be purchased recess, lunch and times after school. These items are meant for a snack and we remind parents to discuss proper eating habits with their children. Many students are given $1.00 by parents for their recess and may have the choice to purchase a snack item. The concern is not this, but we have had to restrict several students from purchasing more than one item. A snack item will not contravene Canada’s Food Guide, but excess certainly is unhealthy. Practise balance.
HOT MEAL PROGRAM AND BREAKFAST
We have some wonderful help with the three meals a week we now serve but could use a couple of more hands on Wednesday’s, with the Kraft dinner and the making of sandwiches. On Monday’s and Wednesday’s, sandwiches are made ready for student purchase throughout the week. The shelf life of a middle school sandwich is two days. We are seeking any parent or volunteer who can spear-head or oversee the breakfast program at our school for the school year. Mr. Albert Slade performs this duty at the high school by ordering product and creating a monthly schedule of volunteers. With the support of ‘West Side Charlies’, ‘Kids Eat Smart Foundation’ and the ‘Clarenville Rotary Club’ and volunteers, we feel a breakfast program will serve our students tremendously!
