INSPIRATIONAL CONTACT

With over 40 cross-country runners ready to run at the first meet of the year at Balbo Elementary in Shoal Harbour, a young runner in grade 5 received a note from his mom. It reads as follows:  Good Luck Sweetie: It does not matter if you win as long as you try your best. Love you, Mom.  Now that’s true middle school communication. Way to go mom!

THE CANADIAN HALF PINTS VISIT MIDDLE SCHOOL

The Canadian Half Pints basketball stars have the unique opportunity, because they are small, to talk to young people about the importance of not being teased, of being tolerant and charitable. The message is that everyone has a talent to be discovered - one talent of the Half Pints is their outstanding basketball ability. In addition to dazzling students with their on court performance, they have a presentation entitled "Don’t Tease" focusing on how people judge others and on how to recognize and avoid teasing. The school will fund this educational experience with no charge to parents and students. On Monday Oct. 18th at 11:00 a.m. come along and share in the message. Bring any young children!

GUIDANCE PROGRAMS : 2004-2005 SCHOOL YEAR

CONFLICT MEDIATION TRAINING:

Twenty five students from grades 6-8 will take part in a two day Peer Mediation Training Program. This program involves teaching students the skills necessary to mediate disputes that may occur with students both in and out of school. Students will learn the rules for fighting fair, basic good listening skills, conflict resolution skills and when and how to report problems to teachers or administrators. Students will be selected for this course based on teacher recommendations, student interest and parental consent. The training program will take place early in the fall.

CAREER EDUCATION (Gr. 8)

As part of their health program the grade 8 students will complete a career education component. This program will focus on topics such as self awareness, budgeting, career awareness, the world of work, creating your own business, resumes and interviews. This program will be done on a term basis with half of the grade eights completing it in term one and the rest of the grade eights completing it in term two.

STUDY SKILLS ( Gr. 4 & 5)

This program will be offered to the grade 4's in term one and the grade five’s in term two. We will cover topics such as how to study, time management, and organizational skills. Students will also be exposed to a variety of different memory strategies.

INTERNET SAFETY & YOUTH VIOLENCE ISSUES (Gr. 7)

These programs will be offered through a partnership between the Guidance Counsellor and the RCMP. The internet safety program will teach students the skills necessary to stay safe while they are using this very worthwhile tool. The MISSING program will be used to teach these skills. The MISSING program is a computer game based on the true story of a 13 year old boy who was kidnapped by an adult he met over the internet. The program on youth violence issues will examine such topics as dating violence and bullying.

DARE & HEALTH PROGRAM (Gr. 6)

Once again this year the grade six students will be offered the DARE program (drug awareness) in partnership with the RCMP. This program will be offered after students have completed Intensive Core French.  As part of their health program the guidance counselor will also offer sessions to the grade sixes on Puberty, Stress and good Mental Health

PEER TUTORING PROGRAM

It is our plan this year to have our own peer tutoring program in addition to the one offered at the high school. Students in grade eight will be trained to tutor students in the younger grades and perhaps even students at their own grade level. Peers tutors will be selected based on teachers’ recommendations.

SAFE SCHOOLS POLICY

Work will continue this year on our Safe Schools Policy (soon to be added to our school’s home page). It is our plan to undertake many school wide initiatives that are outlined in this policy. More information on this will be available at a later date.

RECYCLING AT CLARENVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL

One of the goals of the staff and students of Clarenville Middle School for this school year is to increase the recycling. Last year our school did not score well in this area, but every effort is being made this year to increase this. WE Can SUCCEED!

1. Each classroom has been assigned a recycling captain who helps with the recycling in the classroom.

2. An account has been set up at ‘KC recycling’ where parents and members of the community can drop off recycling. The money will be deposited into the school account.

3. There will be a recycling blitz the first Wednesday of every month (starting October 6th). The recycling trailer will be parked by our school so that parents can drop off their recycling any time during that day.

Just a reminder when preparing recycling, remove all straws, caps, and rinse out all containers.

RECENT STUDENT "WAY TO GO’S"

The following items were published in the daily morning bulletin. The intention is to celebrate the many wonderful student actions and deeds that occur in and outside our school. We have much to be proud of !

Way to go: to three grade 8 boys who assisted with stacking paper and setting up the canteen prior to school opening. Thanks to Jordan Pittman, Matthew Power and Robert Kelly.

Way to go : to Megan Soper who found a bracelet and returned it to the office so the owner could be found.

Way to go: to Alex Parrott who won a National Poster Contest this past summer. The contest was a ‘Be Kind to Animals Week’ contest where students were asked to make a poster showing how to be kind to animals. Alex drew his dog ‘Ryder’ (Montreal Canadien Fan) eating beneath a tree with a bird overhead. Receiving $200.00 and a year’s supply of dog food for Ryder, the project was launched by his teacher Ms. Pye while he was in grade 4. Way to go Alex and also to Ms. Pye for making it all possible!

Way To Go: Josh Ennis, Sara Avery and Andrew Upshaw who forfeited their lunch yesterday in order that the younger students may have their pizza in the case of a shortfall. In its place they received a sandwich. Senior students assisting younger middle school students!! True Middle School Leaders!!

Way To Go: Brandon Smith, Jamie Sweetland and Stacey King who have volunteered to look after the games room. Thank-you !

Also, to Zoe Price for showing great sportsmanship to the students of 4Vey. She left her volleyball group yesterday in the gym and joined the grade 4Vey boys. Thanks for making our youngest students feel welcome Zoe!

Way to go: to Justin Walters (Grade 8): A grade 4 student dropped his money just after recess outside the office door. Justin , passing by, stopped and assisted him. True Middle School behaviour we are very proud of!!

Way To Go: to Victoria Brannan and Ashley Balsom who discovered some missing items yesterday, a wrist watch and a recorder. The owner of the wrist watch was Corbin Boone, a grade 8 student, while the owner of the other item is unknown. Thank-you to our newest students for being great responsible students!

Way To Go: to Stephen Norris (Gr. 5) who quickly assisted a classmate when he dropped his crayons on the floor. Zachery was really appreciative!

Way To Go : to Zachery Austin who, as reported by a classmate, assisted the caretaker while in the lunchroom by removing some litter from the table tops around his space. According to Zachery’s classmate, he knew that Mr. Piercey was the only caretaker working during the day. A very responsible action Zachery!

Way To Go: To Benjamin Drover and Kieran Vasanthan (5Budgell) who waited to speak to a teacher in the lunchroom BUT waited for their conversation to end. They also kept a short distance back as to not to listen to their comments. Lesson: All students are reminded that if two teachers, students, parents are talking and you wish to speak to one of them, you should stand a comfortable distance back and WAIT for the two to end their conversation. Like the students of 5Budgell!

Way to go: to Claudine Vivian , Jenny Vivian and Chantal Rochon who volunteered to clean the trays after Friday’s wonderful meal.

Also, to Zoe Price who found a sum of money and delivered it to the office so the rightful owner could be found.

Way to go : to Kenneth Neil and Brett LeDrew who cleaned up the cross-country running trail so runners could run it smoothly. Great job guys and on behalf of the over 80 runners , thank - you.

Also, huge thank-you to the following students who contributed a nice sum of Campbell Soup Labels: Megan Soper (5Budgell) , Nicholas Skiffington (4Vey), and Jenine Sheppard(4Vey). Much thanks! Great for our school points program.

PARENT SALUTE

To Brenda Rose (Grant’s mom) who on opening day was directing several students to their classrooms and easing the anxiety of opening day jitters

To Paul Perry (Meagan and Ryan’s dad) who assembled 3 bookcases and 3 computer carts for our school. A huge time commitment!

To Mr. Dave Hawkins and Mr. Tom Walsh who volunteered and planned the delivery of a volleyball clinic and supper for over 20 of our female stars.
