THE BEOTHUKS OF NEWFOUNLAND

A RESEARCH PROJECT BY THE GRADE FIVE STUDENTS OF FATIMA ACADEMY

The Grade five students and their teacher Mr. Robin McGrath researched the topic Beothuk Indians on the Internet.  They were able to find a lot of information in a variety of locations on the Internet.  The students found this way of doing research very interesting and very different from their usual methods which involved using the school and public libraries. The following table provides links to many of the Internet sites the grade five class used to gather information:

THE BEOTHUKS
The Recent Indians of the Island of Newfoundland
Newfoundlands Aboriginal Peoples
The Beothuks
Beothuks
Beothuk Beliefs and Practices
Beothuk Culture
Post-European Contact Beothuk History
Bishop John Inglis Interview with Shanawdithit
Pictures
Beothuk Village
The information discovered really increased the knowledge of every student.  To conclude the project each student wrote a little about what they had learned.
The Beothuk
Author - Allison English
The Beothuk were people who lived in Newfoundland.  They came here in 1600 BC.  The Beothuk always hunted their own food. Some of the food they hunted was: caribou, rabbits, moose, seals, fish, and much more. They also killed moose and seals for their fur. They built cabins out of the furs. When there was cracks in the houses they put moss between them. And when it rained, the rain didn't go through. When they were bored they did different activities. They did things like singing, dancing, playing games, and much more. They didn't always hunt. When they hunted they used arrows, spears, and other hunting tools. Later the Europeans came and asked to trade coats for guns. So they got in a big fight and had a debate. The Europeans killed all the Beothuks except for Shessihise and her two children. Later on two Europeans came and killed her two children. Later on a scientist came and took her away for further study.

The   Beothuk were people who lived in Newfoundland many  years ago. They had to hunt for their food like rabbits, moose, turres, caribou, deers, and fish. Shanidittie was the last Beothuk to ever live. She died near Grand Falls, Newfoundland in 1929 . They lived in tepees   and fished in canoes. They tried to catch her but they couldn't, they caught her after a while. They  didn't have forks, knives, plates, combs, and other stuff like us.  The Beothuk didn't have any money to buy stuff. Back then they didn't have computers to entertain themselves so they    probably had dances or stuff.

When we read it there are lots of things to learn.  It said that the Beothuk uses a stick with a rock with a sharp top to hunt.  They had spears and other things.  It said that one Indian was one of the fastest runners. Bad guys were trying to shoot him but he was faster then the bullet.  They caught him and put him in jail but he escaped and they never found him again..They had dogs to guard them. On the Internet you can get what ever information you want.

The Beothuks  lived in the year1500 B.C. They ruled Newfoundland and Labrador. They used to sleep in a  tepee and they had a little fire in it to cook the stuff that they used to eat. They used to fight against the people who were trying to take their food. They had to use their knives to cut their hair. The tepee was a cone shape and only a few people could fit into a tepee because there was not enough  room in it because of the fire.  The games that they played were different then our games now. They ate all the stuff that they found and liked. They fished in canoes.

Long, long ago there were people called Beothuks. Beothuks were Indians that lived 2000 BC or 3000 BC. They lived on moose, deer , birds and other living things. They traded with other people for guns, swords and other protecting things. They lived in tepees in the woods where it was easier to hunt. Beothuks lived in Newfoundland, B.C., and other parts of Canada. The last Beothuk to live was a woman named Shanadithit. They found her in Grand Falls.  There are no Beothuks left in any part of the world now that we know of, but there are Indians. They had to cut their hair with knives or with rocks. They got around in kayaks not the modern day cars. They had to dress really warm in the winter but they didn't in the summer.
