Even though Cuslett is small, there still are many
performers living or came from there. These people
include Eddie Coffey who is a very well known singer
and song writer to us Newfoundlanders. Eddie is known all
over for his song "Tribute to Brian Tobin". This particular
song tells of how the Spanish Trawlers fished illegally off
the banks of Newfoundland. Eddie, not only sings but
also plays the accordion, acoustic guitar, and tin whistle.
Eddie spends much of his time in Toronto but, on occasion,
travels back to Cuslett and plays in the local clubs and dance
halls. Coffey also wrote the theme song for the Come Home
Year celebrations, "Emoc Emoh" which is Come Home
backwards. Eddie’s dedication and love for the Cape Shore
quite evident throughout the summer months.
Eddie's mother, Gladys
Coffey, is also very talented. She
entertains local people by playing the accordion and tin whistle
at her home. While Mrs. Coffey is in her 80's she is doing
really well and enjoys going to the card games that are held at
the Community Centre each Tuesday night.
Also becoming very well
known is Judith Morrissey who is an
excellent guitarist and
singer at the age of 18. Morrissey
has
performed at many benefit
concerts and now is persuing a
career in music at Memorial
University of Newfoundland.
Another person that has
become very popular for his song,
"My Cape Shore Home"
is Jerome Manning. Jerome
wrote
this song and composed it on
the Come Home Year
C.D.
Manning has lived and worked in Labrador for many years and
while away he wrote this song.
