WELCOME TO
The Avalon Peninsula

The Avalon Peninsula was one of the first areas of the province to be settled.
This irregularly shaped peninsula once was a part of the European continent that
drifted westward 400 million years ago.  It was flooded by oceans, scoured by
glaciers, and landscaped into an amazing creation with rocks, cliffs, coves, and
bays. The Avalon Peninsula is located 47 degrees north and 54 degrees west.
Precipitation is distributed evenly throughout the year. Rain and fog are frequent
in St. John's, which is also one of Canada's windiest cities.  The area which we
live, the Cape Shore, has weather similar to St. John's.

The Avalon Peninsula offers nightlife and wildlife, city scenes and untouched
natural beauty.  This is a place where you can photograph herds of caribou or sea
bird colonies, icebergs, or whales. Also, caribou, moose, and black bear are
common in all areas along the Avalon.  Moreover, among the many small fur
bearing animals are muskrat, beaver, red fox, lynx, otter, hare and squirrels.

Furthermore, salmon, lobster, crab, squid, herring, mackerel, and capelin are
numerous in most of the bays of Newfoundland. Cod, halibut, flounder, redfish,
and turbot are plentiful in the Grand Banks and some coastal waters.

Finally, coniferous trees are the most common found here because our province
lies in the boreal forest zone, or taiga.

The population for each community of the Cape Shore is as follows:

                        Branch:  approximately 400 people
                        Point Lance:  approximately 150 people
                        St. Bride's:  approximaety 500 people
