The territory that I am writing about is Nunavut. The population of Nunavut is approximately 26,745 people. The area of Nunavut is 2,093,190 km. The Capital City of Nunavut is Iqualuit. The winters are nine months long and January's temperature is -30 degrees and July's temperature is 15 degrees
.
They go dog sledding, kayaking, whale watching, big game hunting, trophy fishing, dancing, bird watching, boating, canoeing, cruises, rock collecting, mountain climbing, and skiing. They also have photography, events, and festivals.
The school enrollment in Nunavut is rising, but few students graduate from high-school. Many Nunavut schools teach Inuktitut in the early years and English in the later years. They can learn Inuktitut when they are young and English when they are a certain age.
Before Nunavut became
it's own territory it was a part of the Northwest Territories. There is not a
lot of his
tory to
Nunavut. It first became a territory on April 1, 1999. It
nearly makes up 20% of Canada. Nunavut's first history is that of the Inuit and
their ancient ancestors who first migrated to Arctic some five-thousand years
ago. There are three major regions of Nunavut: Baffin Region, Kitikmeot Region,
and Keratin Region.
The types of religion in Nunavut are: Buddhism and Christianity. About 80% of Nunavut are Christians and 20% are Buddhists.
Many
retail stores there carry fresh, frozen, or vacuumed packed country
foods. Many Nunavut hotels offer delicious, mouth watering, well-prepared
country foods. Caribou, a northern staple, is widely available. They also have Masco, which is a very well marbled beef. They also have
Char and Scallops.
. Some of Nunavut's vegetation are rare berries, lichens, arctic willows, moss, tough grass, and small willow shrubs.
There are lots of tourist destinations in Nunavut. They are Thule Settlement, dating back thousands of years ago; Five Edge Tours; Naturalist and Cultural Tours; and Auyuittuk National Park.
The men outnumbered women 12,915
to 11,820 in population. Children aged 15 and under accounted for 40
% of
Nunavut's population in 1996, compared to 21% in the same age group in Canada.
In contrast people 65 and over made only 2% of Nunavut's population, compared
with 12% in Canada's population. The census counted 5,270 families in Nunavut in
the year of 1996, of these 2,655 virtually half were married couples. In
addition, about 31%, or 1,635 were common-law families. Of the lone-parent
families, the majority of 730 families were headed by women. Nunavut is
Inikititut, which means "Our Land". Unemployment is about 22% and
roughly one-third of the people are on Welfare. Airplanes bring supplies to most
communities because you cannot get to any other places to get supplies. Also,
the Inuit travel moistly by planes or by dogsleds. In the summer, Iqaluit has 20
hours of sunlight, but in the winter, Iqaluit has only 4 hours of sunlight.
In conclusion Nunavut is a very interesting province. It is also a great place to go on your vacation.
