The province I have chosen to do is the Yukon, which is located in Northwest Canada. The Yukon has long, cold winters and short, warm summers. There is a small population in the Yukon because the people don't like to live in the harsh weather. The most important industry there is gold mining. The Yukon got it's name from the Indian word "YouDcon" meaning greatest or big river. The capital of the Yukon is Whitehorse and the population there is 29,900. The area is 483,450 square km.
The territorial government maintains schools at the population centers. These are public high schools grade eight through twelve. Churches also operate schools in Whitehorse. Robert Campbell, a British fur trader of the Hudson's Bay company, became the first white person to explore the Yukon region.
The main types of food in the Yukon are meat, poultry, fish, potato, rice, pasta, salads, sandwiches, stocks, sauces, soups, and vegetables.
One tourist destination in the Yukon is Wood Buffalo National Park of Canada. This is our country's largest national park and one of the largest in the world. Another tourist destination in the Yukon is the Yukon White Pass Railroad, with its combination of cruise ships and bus trips. The South Sitcom Railroad provides old fashioned steam train excursions north of Toronto. The Algoma Central Railway offers tours on 269 miles of track beginning at Sault Ste Marie.
The territories' temperatures vary greatly. The average temperature for January is 5FC to 15FC at Whitehorse. In the summer the temperature is 15FC to 15FC. Rainfall averages from 45cm to 65cm. In the winter, the amount of snowfall is 40cm which can be a lot.
Every second winter in late February or early March since 1970, athletes and organizers from the Northwest Territory, Yukon territory and Alaska have gathered to light the torch that symbolizes the spirit of the Arctic Winter games. In the winter, sled dogs race across from the Tundra under the Collars Streamers of the Aurora Borealis. Other sports require sleds, snowmobiles, skies or snowshoes. Other sports that occur in the Yukon are hiking, camping, and fishing.
From my project, the Yukon is a territory which has a cold climate most of the time and a lot of rainfall and snow. There are lots of sports and tourist destinations that people enjoy. Not too many people live there because of the harsh weather. I learned many things about the Yukon that I didn't know before.
