Famous People
For a small community like Patrick's
Cove, there are many
famous people who have grown up moved away and
passed away, but I assure
you they are not forgotten.
Mr. Patrick
Judge
Mr.Patsy Judge well known for his, whistle paying died
many years ago but the sound of that whistle still lingers in
mind. He was known all over the shore parts of St.John's
and parts of Canada. Mr. Patsy was said to make the
whistle dance. My father once told me of how, one windy
night he played the whistle through the cracks in the wall
of his shed.
My dad remembers how beautiful
the sound was and
how he will never forget how talented
Mr.Patsy Judge really
was.
McGrath, Sheila .Personal Knoweldge. 28, April, 1999.
Mr.Raymond McGrath
Ray, as we like to call him, was a very interesting man. He
lived on "the hill" as local residents liked to call it.
Growing up he made a
decision to enlist in the Second
World War as a machinist
at the U.S. Naval Base at nearby
Argentia. His job
was to repair planes damaged in the war.
When the war came to an end, he returned home to
Patrick's Cove and lived with his mother until her death.
One of the things which impressed local people about
Raymond was his thirst for knowledge. To this end, he
was a prolific reader. Hundereds of books and magazines
could be found at his home. He became sort of an expert
on many different subjects, one of which was his interest
on plants found growing on the hills and barrons
surrounding Patrick's
Cove.
Critch, Melvin. Interview. 26, April, 1999.
Mr. Hubert McGrath
Hubert is a man who is well known all around the Cape
Shore, mainly the students of Fatima Academy, St.Brides.
Hubert is a well-educated man. He began his career when
he began teaching in a small two room school house in
Patrick's Cove. Unfortunately, the small school in
Patrick's Cove closed, he then went on to teach in a nearby
school located in St.
Bride's, in 1968.
Hubert was a very
intelligent man and in 1980 became principal
of Fatima
Central High School. This school was strong
in extracurricular
and co-curricular activities. But as any
principal would want
a bigger and better school, so in September 1993, he began a
shift system which would enable students to attend school
while renovations were being done. Mr. McGrath is a very
dedicated individual who spent countless hours in the school
making it the best it could be. Unfortunately all good things
come to an end, he came
to the age of retirement and had
to give up his position at Fatima. Consequently, he was
offered another position
in British Columbia as vice
principal. Hubert, proved
over and over again his
dedication and love for his school and his students. This is
why today, Hubert is well known
and respected around the
Cape Shore.
