GEOGRAPHY

Point Lance is a small, rural community located near the
southwest corner of the Avalon Peninsula, on the southern
side of the peninsula that divides Placentia Bay from St.
Mary's Bay.  It lies on the southern most tip of the area
known as the Cape Shore.  The settlement was originally
named Bull Bay, probably because of the three large rocks
known as the Bull, Cow, and Calf which lie just off the
shore, near the middle of  the bay.  It became known as
Point Lance because this point of  land resembles a spear
or a lance.  The current population of  Point Lance is
approximately 150 people with about 40 dwellings.

Point Lance is 11 kilometers from the nearest community of
Branch and 20 kilometers from the community of St.
Bride's.  These are larger communities and people of Point
Lance sometimes avail of the services of these communities.
St. Bride's being the location of the school which serves the
whole area: Point Lance, St. Bride's and the Cape Shore.
The nearest urban area is the town of Placentia which is 60
kilometers away.  Most of the residents of Point Lance do
their major grocery shopping and banking in Placentia.
Point Lance is about 180 kilometers from the province's
                            capital, St. John's.

In terms of the geography of the community, Point Lance
is nestled at the foot of a steep hill on the western side of a
broad valley through which runs a river and a brook.  One
mile to the east another ridge juts out into the ocean, such
that it appears the community is sheltered on both sides by
ridges which lead to the sea.  A beautiful beach runs from
one edge of the community to the other.  Behind this beach,
lie most of the gardens and meadows of the residents which
are still divided up by family inheritance.  The meadows are
fertilized and mown each year to support the livestock within
                            the community.

Residents grow their own vegetables such as potatoes,
turnips and cabbage to see them through the winter
months.    The houses within the community are mostly
built at the bottom of  the steep slope in what would seem
to be the most sheltered area of the community.  In recent
years, more people are building their houses further from
the hill on what is sometimes referred to as the "mash".
As well, people are building their houses along the main road
which leads out of the community.  It seems that the
available land is being used up as more young people
                            settle within Point Lance.
