COMMUNITY SERVICES

Church

The community had a Church as early as 1910, built by the
                            people themselves  in 1925.
The Church we have today was built by Mr. John Joe
English of Branch in 1964.  This Church was newly
renovated in 1994-1995, the cost of supplies and labor being
covered by the residents of the community.

School
The first school in the community was built  in 1920.  This
school remained in the community until 1990.  Students
would complete grades kindergarten to eight in Point Lance
and then continue to St. Bride's to finish grade twelve.
In 1990, the School Board approached parents with the
proposed consolidation of Elementary Schools in St. Bride's.
After a frustrating five months for both School Board
members and parents, a decision was made that Point Lance
was permitted to maintain their kindergarten to grade three
classes within the community for one year, however, grades
three to six moved to the elementary schools in St. Brides.

Committees

Recreation Committee - A few years ago, a Recreation
Committee was set up in Point Lance.  It consisted solely of
the residents of  Point Lance. The main objective of this
committee was to raise funds for a playground to be set up
for the children in  Point Lance.  This committee was quite
successful, as just last year a playground was successfully
put into place.  Not long after the playground was built, some
members of the community volunteered their time to place a
                            fence around the playground.

                            Careen.

Graveyard Committee - Presently, Point Lance has formed
a Graveyard Committee to raise funds for the needed
                            improvements of our graveyard.

Other Services - The first water system was installed around
1962 and extended later, and a sewer system was added
around 1976.  The completion of the road was in 1950 and
the arrival of electricity was in 1966.  Also, in 1972, Point
Lance received it's first telephone services.  Presently, the
community has one convenience store which sells mostly
food and other household supplies. The store was owned
by Debbie Careen, but recently was sold Bernadette Careen.
Their newly renovated community hall hosts most of the social
events of the community:  Bingo, darts, card games, concerts,
                            dances, and garden parties.

In addition, a resident of Point Lance, Wanda Careen, runs a
beauty salon and a solarium business.
