Mr. Conway was interested in singing at a very young age.
During Grade Six, he would sing for his fellow classmates every
Friday. He, at the time, was only eleven years old. As Petey
recalls, he bought his first guitar when he was eleven. He
purchased it from the Simpsons Sears catalogue for $30.00.
Mr. Conway remembers when he would always watch
“Skipper and Company” on Saturday mornings.
He was really
content to sit and listen to another person
sing and play the
guitar. This would spark his interest and
therefore, he would try
to sing and play these songs.
Consequently, local residents were amazed
at the talent of this
individual and, as a result, he was often asked to play for
visitors in his home.
Presently, Mr. Conway enjoys playing his guitar and singing.
He is the proud owner of a 12-string lbaney which he plays at
least five or six days a week. Mr. Conway says that to sit back
in the evening and to play several tunes is very relaxing and
quite delightful for him. He is a profound lover of
Newfoundland and Irish
music.
Mr. Conway is not the only person in his family with a musical
interest. All of his family members enjoy listening to
Newfoundland music.
Also, some are as talented as Mr.
Conway. Two of his sisters
play the guitar and sing. Growing
up, Mr. Conway and other
family members learned the songs,
which they sang, from records that their mother brought home
from St. John’s.
Mr. Conway plays in a band on a regular bases. The band
includes himself, Shane Morrissey and Matt O’Leary. The
band is known as Island Head Country. He recorded a
cassette in October 1993
entitled “My Cape Shore
Home.”
The tape was a huge success
and sold many copies. The
band is hoping to release
another record in the coming spring.
Mr. Conway tells that releasing a record was a goal of his that
he always wanted. With hard luck and determination he was
successful. He called a recording studio and found that the
price was right.
Furthermore, the bands name “Island Head Country” has a
meaning behind it. He tells that it stands for when fishermen
leave the wharf in St. Bride’s, they steam for the fishing
grounds off the place called Island Head.
Mr. Conway enjoys performing a great deal at concerts but as
he says, you can't beat the house parties especially in the
outports. He always gets invited at local parties to share his
musical talent. However, Mr. Conway tells that, at times, he
has lost interest in the band due to the fact that he was the
only singer. It’s
a lot of stress and a lot to expect, when you
have to sing at a club
from 10p.m. to 2a.m. and you're the
only singer. He says
that he would have preferred that
someone sing half of
the songs and, in this way, it would
make things more joyful and
less draining. Although, he has
been the only singer since 1979.
He tells that his favorite song is “My
Cape Shore Home”
which can be found on
his cassette. He comments that when
you listen to the song,
it tells you about our great people and
our surroundings.
It makes you want to come and visit the
Shore especially Cape
St. Mary's Ecological Reserve. When
Mr. Conway was asked
if there was anything he would like to
add to this page, his response was that he loves entertaining
people and he plans on doing it for a
while.
