Penguins

Penguins like to march up and down, slide, ride icebergs, and dive into the water.

They slide on their bellies down hills. This is called tobogganing. They often slide down the hills and dive into the water.

Penguins swim in the sea. Sometimes they pop out of the water, this is called porpising. Penguins spend most of their life in the water

Penguins eat fish, squid, and krill. They live south of the equator. Young penguins eat up to two pounds of food an hour.

There are 18 different types of penguins. All penguins have the same basic shape and coloring. They are members of the bird family.

Penguins

There are 17 different kinds of penguins. They are in the bird family. They all have the same shape body. They have some feathers and cannot fly. They swim in the sea. All penguins live below the equator.

Mama penguins lay one egg. Papa warms the eggs in the snow. They lay eggs every other year. Penguins build their nests on the ground. They dig a shallow hole in the ground. Their down keeps them warm.

They are black and white. They have black and orange long beaks. They weight 30 to 40 pounds. They are 36" tall. Some penguins have long tails.

The penguins live along the shore or on islands. They spend most of there time in the water. They eat small fish and krill. They leave the South Pole when fall comes. They go North to find food in warmer waters. When spring comes the penguins go back to the South Pole. Baby penguins are called chicks.

Rockhopper

All penguins' heads are black and beaks are orange. The rockhopper penguin's eyes are red. The Rockhopper has yellow feathers sticking out of his head. All penguins are black. Penguins like to slide on there belly that is called tobogganing. When they jump out of the water they land on their feet. Penguins like to slide on their bellies. Penguins like to play on land and water they also like to dive in the water. They like to march up snow hills and swim under water. Penguins are sea birds but they cannot fly. Most penguins are good swimmers. When penguin's dives down under the water and pop up again, this is called proposing. Penguins live in the South Pole. They find all there food under the water. Penguins build their nest on top of the ground. Some waddle around quickly and some waddle around slowly. Penguins like to eat fish, krill, shrimp and squid. There are 18 kinds of penguins. They spend most of there time in the water. Krill is the same thing as shrimp. Killer whales are their most dangerous enemy. Little penguins have feathers called down. This keeps them warm. Baby penguins grow fast. All penguins live below the equator.

Adelie Penguins

The Adelie penguin has black heads with white rings around their eyes. They are black and so are their eye's. They live in the cold land of the Antarctic, near the South Pole. They walk very fast. Faster than a man can run. When they are in a hurry they, lie face down and push themselves along. A female Adelie Penguin lay one to three eggs a time. Their eggs hatch in one or two months.

Adelie penguin are black and they have black beaks. They have white rings around their eyes. Their eyes are black.

The Chinstrap penguins have black heads. Their face is white and so is their throat except for a narrow black line that looks like a chinstrap. They have brown eyes and have black beaks. The King penguins have brown eyes and they have black beaks with an orange stripe. They have black heads. They have orange neck patches and sharp claws.

All penguins are sea birds but they cannot fly. They are good Swimmers, they spend most of their time in the water. Penguins waddle. Adelie penguins can move faster then a man can run. There are 18 kinds of penguins. All penguins

are built to live in cold weather. Their feathers and blubber help keep them warm. Some penguins live where it is warm. Penguins find their food in the ocean. They eat fish,squid and krill. They live south of the equator. Most live in Antarctica. The Emperor penguin is the largest penguin. It can weigh up to 90 pounds. It can dive as deep as 1,755 feet. They can stay underwater for 20 minutes. They mate in the winter. All penguins have the same shape and colour.

Chin Strap Penguin

A chin strap penguin has a black head. They range in height from 1 to 4 feet. Penguins weigh about 80 pounds. The penguin's ancestors used to stand 6 feet tall. Their thick coats of fat keep them warm through the winter.

Penguins like to dive. They also like to play games, like sliding on their stomach. Chinstraps love to swim. They can walk better than they can fly. In fact they can't fly!

Most penguins live in Antarctica where it's cold. Penguins feed on krill, squid and fish. They usually mate once a year. When a penguin gets hot it jumps in the water. The killer whale sometimes kills the penguin.

PENGUINS

THERE ARE EIGHTEEN DIFFERENT KINDS OF PENGUINS. WHEN THEY ARE BABIES THEIR WINGS DEVELOP INTO FLIPPERS, THEY STAND OVER THE EGGS IN THEIR NEST. THEY EAT FISH AND KRILL. THEY LIKE TO MAKE THEIR NEST OUT OF GRASS. MOST ALL PENGUINS LIVE IN THE SOUTH POLE, THEY ALSO SPEND MOST OF THEIR LIVES IN THE WATER. THEY DIVE OFF ICE AND SLIDE ON THEIR BELLIES. THE KING PENGUIN IS THE BIGGEST OF ALL. SOME of THEM WALK AS FAR AS 500 MILES.

Playful Penguins

Penguins come in all different sizes. Sometimes penguins like to play on land. They like to play games, and they like to play in the water. Most penguins live in Antarctica. They depend on the ocean food. When they are on land, they gather together at places called Rookeries. Most Rookeries are located on the ground that slopes into the water, here they can get in and out of the water. There are hundreds, thousands or even millions of penguins. There are 18 kinds of penguins. All penguins have the same basic body shape and coloring. They eat fish, squid, and they eat tiny shrimp called krill.
