Churches in New Perlican



CHURCHES

Even with difficult lifestyles people had back in the 1800's and in the early 1900's, everbody still tookthe time to go to church.

ANGLICAN CHURCH:

The first Anglican church in New Perlican was built on a hill in 1834 and was named St.Marks. This churchsuffered a minor fire when a flanker from the chimneylanded on the shingles and started a fire. The fire was soon controlled and the church was repaired. St.Mark's Anglican church was destroyed by a fire in1886. The third Anglican, ST.Augustine's Anglicanchurch, was started on January 1, 1886.

UNITED CHURCH:

The first united church was built in 1893 and afterfifteen to twenty years of service it was turned intoa day school. The church was given its name by theunited church woman in 1963 or 1964. The present united church, St. Matthews was built in 1913 and dedicated on december 28. The U.C.W. started in 1962 from a group that was formally called ladies aid, which servedthe same purpose as the u.c.w has today.
