History

The fishing community of Bridgeport  was first settled in the 1880's by Josiah Noel from Harbor Grace.  It was named by Adam Chaulk, who renamed it shortly after returning from Bridgeport, Nova Scotia.  A significant part of Bridgeport was Little Bridgeport.  This small area underwent a change in 1968 as the people of Little Bridgeport were relocated.  Most residents moved to Bridgeport but some moved as far away as Twilingate, approximately 25 kilometers away.
There were two schools in Bridgeport. One was a two room Salvation Army school and the other was a one room United school. When the road came through they had to demolish the Salvation Army school. The United school is still standing and is now the community hall.  There was one major store in Bridgeport owned by Paul Small. He was born in 1872. In this store you could purchase clothes, groceries, footwear and medicines. It was often paid for by fish, cod-liver oil or what ever fishermen had. Originally there were three churches in Bridgeport - Salvation Army, United and Pentecostal. Today residents must travel to a neighbouring community to attend any type of church service.
