Interview

As part of researching information for this community profile, we had to interview a senior member of our community to enlighten us about early life in the area.

Education years ago: Education took place in a very crowded one room school house. To use the washroom, you had to go to the outhouse. To heat the school, students had to bring wood and different people had turns lighting the fire.

Christmas years ago: There were 12 days of Christmas with lots of mummers visiting house to house enjoying cake and syrup. Although Christmas gifts were usually limited to an apple and a peppermint knob, we were happy and proud of what we got. The Christmas tree would put up Christmas Eve  after the children went to bed.

Bonfire night years ago: Preparation for Bonfire night included cutting bows. It was s customary to see who had the biggest fire. They would not have anything to eat during the bonfire, they would just watch the fire.

Health care years ago: If you were sick, you had to go to the hospital in Twillingate by boat or dog sled  usually the mother would fix cuts and other injures. They would get supplies from trees and other plants like Mur and Sindly leaves that would also help animals in the farm.

Weather: Weather seemed different years ago. The summers were better with more comfortable  temperatures  and the winters had a lot more snow than we get now.  In the winter they would make snow cabins and go sliding on horse sleds.
