Education years ago!
Education years ago was pretty different from now. They didn’t have buses so they had to walk to school know matter what the weather was like. They didn’t have any paper so every thing they would write down they would write on a slate and they used a slate pencil. They would bring a bottle of water and a piece of cloth to clean it off. The one-room only had up to grade 11. In winter, each student had to bring a junk of firewood for the fire and if you had to use an outdoor toilet.
Christmas years ago!
Christmas year ago was pretty different from now. Christmas trees use to have balloons on them for decoration. For Christmas dinner, they had rabbit and vegetables. For desert they use to have molasses cake and prune pie. It was tradition to have lots of mummers come in their house to have a dance and entertain. Cake and syrup would often be the lunch given to the mummers.
Weather years ago!
They use to have bad weather in the winter time.
They use to have lots of snow. In the summer time they use to have a lot
of sun shine and not very much rain only a little.
Work years ago!
The men worked in the lumber woods in the winter months using a buck saw to cut their wood. They did not have the luxury of a chain saw. As a source of food and employment, the fishery was very much apart of the local economy. Fisherman depended on the Cod fish using the traditional “hook and line” to catch their fish.
Bonfire Night years ago!
Bonfire night years ago was the same has it is now. They use to roast marshmallows and wieners over the fire.
