Mayor’s Message

 

 Summerford is a beautiful picturesque town situated on New World Island, which is the second largest island in Newfoundland, and is located on the north east caost of the province. Summerford has a population of approximately 1200 people.  Some of the people of Summerford work in various industries including fishing, logging and lumber while others work in business and health care.  Our town boasts several tourist attractions such as a walking trail around Round pond, ski trails, surrounding islands, beautiful rocky beaches and great scenic views of ice bergs. Cross country sking is very popular with Kirk Howell, a twenty year old resident of this town winning one gold and two silver medals for Newfoundland and Labrador at the Canadian Winter Games at Grand Prairie, Alberta in 1995. As well, several of its other youth made the Canadian National Cross Country Skiing Team from 1995-1997.  There are a variety of businesses including two hardware stores, two supermarkets, a pharmacy, two banking facilities, two gas bars/convenience stores and two craft shops. Located in the heart of Summerford is the Town Building which houses a Community Centre, Town Office and Chambers, fire Hall and Library. Summerford’s Volunteer Fire Department is well trained in fire and rescue and residents of New World Island have access to research through available literature as well as access to the Internet Summerford has an abundance of recreational facilities which include soft ball and soccer feilds, tennis and basketball courts and a children’s playground. Along the walking trail there are picnic tables and a lookout where breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding islands, with a view as far as Boyd’s Cove and Twillingate Harbour, can be observed.  Each year around the last week of July-first week of August, Summerfords hosts a week long “Summerfest (year)”. This week is packed with fun-filled activities where residents , visiting families and tourist from all over join in the celebrations.
