Interview

Education Years Ago!

Education years ago was a lot different than today. Years ago, children went to a one or two room school . There were 5 or 6 grades in one room and they only had one teacher for every grade (up to grade 11) and every subject. To keep the school warm in winter, student’s  would have to bring wood for the fire. They also had to use a outdoor toilet.

Work years ago!

Work years ago was different than today because years ago most of the work was done by hand and the hours of work was very long. Most of the work was fishery and forestry related. People who worked at the fishery had to work from daylight to dark. The fishermen had to pull their nets by hand. The woman had to work long hours at home, as well as tend to the fish, spreading the fish on the flake and looking after it until it was cured. In the winter the men had to work in the woods because there was no such thing as unemployment.

Christmas Years Ago!

People years ago celebrated Christmas a lot different than we do today. People cut their own Christmas trees and made their own decorations to put up. They did not  get as many gifts as we do. They would be happy to get a exercise book and a pencil, socks or homemade mitts. Many times this would be the only time they would get fresh fruit. People went mummering more often then they do now. In fact today, it is almost died out.

Community Living Years Ago!

Community living years ago was a lot different because people used horses and dogs as a mean of transportation. Children walked to school instead of going on
bus. People raised their own animals for food and grew their own vegetables.
Years ago people had to salt and dry their meat because there were no refrigerators.   They also used lamps as a source of light.

Bonfire Night Years Ago!

Years ago bonfire night was not much different than today. Years ago a lot more people had their own family bonfire. They gathered old boats and barrels for the fire.
