Our community is about 120 years old.  The first settlers were Henry, Aich and Lenore Rideout. Later, people moved from Sam’s Cove , West Harbor and  Whales Gulch to settle in the area. Valley Pond has undergone several name changes throughout its history. Originally, it was called Salt Water Pond and it was changed  to Valley Pond.  When people moved from Wales Gulch it was renamed Wales Gulch. Then in 1982 it was once again given its current name, Valley Pond . This name is appropriate because we are located in a valley and a pond runs through the community. Electricity was not available in Valley Pond until 1967.

The population of Valley Pond right now is 115-120, including student’s who are away attending University. The population in our community is getting smaller because when young people get out of school they move away to find work and the older population are dying.
