Virgin Arm got it’s
name from all the virgin spruce trees that were located around the arm.
My community has a long history of fishing and logging. This was passed
on from generation to generation. The fishermen would work from April to
October, long hard irregular hours. When squid came to shore , the fishermen
would go out squid gigging, and then bring them to the wharf where family
members were waiting to help pip and dry them. They would dry the squids
on flakes. It wouldn’t take real long because everyone had big families.
The loggers would go to Miller Town to work. When they left they didn’t
know when they’d be home again. Sometimes they were gone
six months to a time. When they were working they didn’t find it strange
to see moose and bears checking out their campsite. Some special events
that went on back then are garden parties in the summer, where everyone
would get together to have a lunch and play games. Than at Christmas time
they would have skits and Christmas songs at the church where most of the
community would participate in something.
