The Baritone Horn Long Note Contest is a simple competition designed to improve embouchure, breath control and intonation. The winning contestant simply plays a steady note on the Baritone longer than any other contestant. After in-class trials, we select three contestants for a public display. Each contestant has his own clean mouthpiece and takes a turn playing the same horn. Each contestant gets one free practice blow. Then each one in turn plays his longest note. The attempts are timed by a stopwatch. This is repeated twice more, making three turns each in all. The player with the longest single steady note, his best of three, wins. On April 4 2007, Tommy won the contest with a 33-second long note. In practice, he blew a good tone for 36 seconds!
This game can be played with any wind instrument, or with a snare drum long roll.
