On Wednesday, January 10th, 2001, Mr. Moore's Grade Six students at Jens Haven Memorial School in Nain, Labrador had some very special visitors. Mrs. Maria Brazil (retired employee of Canada Post in Ottawa), Ms. Kathy Edmunds (Postmaster in Nain), and Mr. William Barbour (President of the Labrador Inuit Association) came to their classroom to present a cheque for $500 to their teacher.
Mr. Moore, who had his students registered in the Annual Canada Post Pen Pal Program before October 6, 2000, was one of 30 winners across Canada in this early registration contest. There were approximately 18,000 educators signed up across Canada for this contest which is open to students from Grades 2-7.
"All the students were delighted about winning such a large amount of money," said Mr. Moore. "I really like the program for a number of reasons, but most importantly, the students have an opportunity to strengthen their letter writing and reading skills while becoming more informed about the lives and experiences of other children across Canada."
All the students said they enjoy getting letters of their own and sharing them with other classmates. Mr. Moore will be using the money for educational activities and resources.
