Communication and Trade The boat played a fundamental role in the lives of Brunette's inhabitants. It was integral to the fishery, and since Brunette is an island, it was the only available means of transportation to and from the mainland. Consequently, the men of Brunette paid considerable attention to the building or buying of boats. The nearby coastal communties of Grand Bank and Harbour Breton were frequented by the island's residents. Not only did they conduct business there, but medical services were available in these settlements. Prior to being vacated, telegraph and mail services provided contact with the main land of Newfoundland. Morever, Brunette was regulary visited by coastal boat service.
