FORTUNE MILLENNIUM FESTIVAL

Introduction

The town of Fortune is situated on the western side of the Burin Peninsula, near the mouth of Fortune Bay, in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The name is thought to have originated from the Portuguese word "fortuna" meaning "harbour of good fortune."

The town was incorporated in 1945 and has a present population of approximately 2200. The fishery is the mainstay of our economy. A modern fish processing facility operated by Fishery Products International (

Other people in our town are employed in numerous spin-off services. Our town boasts a modern K-9 school (Lake Academy); an ice arena; a marine service centre; a pharmacy; a bank; a public library; a post office; a motel; several restaurants; three churches; a movie rental outlet; several service stations; a federal government excise and customs office; a softball and soccer field; a community center; a well trained and fully equipped volunteer fire department; and several hardware, general, and convenience stores.

Our town also boasts of one of the world's richest fossil sites. Dubbed by international geologists as the "Golden Spike," the shale cliffs of Fortune Head have PreCambrian-Cambrian trace fossils and has been designated as a world ecological reserve. Fortune is also the Newfoundland terminus for the St. Pierre et Miquelon Ferry Service. During the peak summer season as many as twenty thousand tourists visit St. Pierre et Miquelon by way of Fortune - "the Gateway to the French Islands."
