History of Our School

Lumsden Central High was built in 1962.  It was to serve the students of Lumsden North and Lumsden South that came together as a result of the Resettlement Initiative put forth by the Newfoundland Government during that era.  Students from the nearby communities of Deadman's Bay and Cape Freels also attended Lumsden Central High and Lumsden Elementary.

In 1982-83 a new gymnasium was built which literally connected Lumsden Central High and Lumsden Elementary.  It was renamed Lumsden School Complex.  Lumsden School Complex was a kindergarten to grade twelve school.  Our student population was stable at approximately two hundred and fifty for many years.  As the case with many rural schools in Newfoundland and Labrador enrolment is declining.  It continued to drop and in 2006 it was at an all time low of 120 students.

The school board decided it was time to bus our level students (Grade 10 - 12) to Lester Pearson Memorial High in Wesleyville.  In September 2007 the move was made and our school was renamed Lumsden Academy.  We are now a K - 9 school with eighty-five students.
