Our Language Arts Policy states:
- A concerted effort will be made to create a stimulating environment which will encourage students to use and produce a wide variety of language.
- A learning environment will be fostered where students will feel free to take risks.
- The learning environment wil foster positive self-esteem
- The program will include all components of the language arts (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).
- The program will address the fact that lantguage instruction permeates all area of the curriculum.
- The program will make provisions for deficits students may have acquired during the process of language acquisition.
- The Language Arts program will be literature-based.
- Instruction will emphasize utilization of language that is whole, meaningful, and relevant.
- Instruction will take into account the student's level of develepment as well as the student's own particular learning style.
- An eclectic approach will be taken in instruction in the language arts.
- Evaluation will be continuous, as positive as possible, and include a variety of data-collection techniques (observations, portfolios, journals, tests, etc.)
- Students will be expected to become increasingly involved in self-evaluation.
- Students will be expected to become actively involved in all stages of language development.
- Students will be given adequate opportunity to collaborate.
- Teachers will be good role models of all aspects of the language arts.
- Teachers will have high expectations for student achievement and development.
- Teacher will try to keep abreast of current trends in the process of language acquisition.
