
Besides being Principal of New World Island East Elementary, Roland also does subject teaching in grades five and six. He has been teaching for twenty-three years, out of which he has taught for one year in Little Heart's Ease, one year in Change Islands, and the remaining twenty-one at his present school.
Roland was born and raised in Twillingate where he graduated from the local high school in 1969. He then attended Memorial University of Newfoundland(MUN) from 1969-1973 and received his B.A.(Ed.) degree majoring in Geography. He returned to university in 1974 and 1986 for further studies and in 1992 he began studying towards his M.(Ed.) in administration.
In his spare time, Roland enjoys moose and turr hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family.
He is married to Norma (Smith) who is a student support teacher at Twillingate Island Elementary. They have one son, Patrick age 8 and they live in their hometown of Twillingate.
Roland was involved in the Integrational Literacy Program; his current school pioneered the Family Literacy Program, hiring a teacher to regularly visit homes in the area to promote early literacy skills.
