Notice to Parents re: School Closure Due to Weather
The following temperatures have been approved by the Labrador School Board to be used as guidelines in cancelling school:
K-3 -45 C with wind chill
K-7 -50 C with wind chill
K-12 -55C with wind chill
These temperatures assume that students are properly dressed for the conditions.

The NLA weather committee 2003/2004 (Mrs. Georgina Allen, Mr. David Wolfrey, Mr. Richard Rich and Mrs. Hayward) will decide in the morning between 7:00 and 7:15 if conditions are not fit to open school. This gives enough time to notify all staff and CBC radio so that the notice will be broadcast around 7:30-7:40am. A decision for an afternoon closure will be made around 11:00-11:15 (when possible) so that CBC can be notified for airing between 11:30 and 12:00. When operating, the local radio station will be notified as well.

Parents are advised to use their own discretion in sending their children (especially small ones) to school when school remains open in poor weather. They should take into consideration their child’s age, maturity, health, the conditions in the community, and whether their child walks to school or gets a ride. It is very important that all students dress properly for the weather.

Please phone the school if you have special concerns about your child and the weather guidelines.

Creative Arts and the Fringe Festival
By: Jennifer Michelin
On November 21-24 I along with 7 other students went to Goose Bay for the Creative Arts Festival. The 7 other students were Edith Sheppard, Stephanie Nochasak, Holly Flowers, Stanley Wolfrey Jr., Gary Sheppard, Candice Elson and Desiree Wolfrey. Mrs. Rich came with us. It was a very fun-filled weekend. We attended 2 workshops. One workshop was with magician Peter Mannie. The other workshop was with Red Shuga.

We learned some new magic acts and we made up our own rap and dance. We also acted as “hypers” (to get the crowd hyper).

We watched 4 plays. One from Mud Lake, Black Tickle, Hopedale and Natuashish. They were all really good.

Yahtzee Tournament in Grade 3-5 Class
By: G. Cox
The Grade 3-5 class at Northern Lights Academy participated in a Yahtzee tournament between October and December. Yahtzee is a game of skill and chance played with 5 dice. Students had to choose where to place their combinations on a score sheet so as to gain the higher score. Each student played 16 games. Games were played during recess and after school. During the play-offs Melinda and Franklin were very successful. They met in the final and Franklin won the championship 2 games to 1. Both students were awarded trophies for their efforts. All students seemed to have enjoyed the tournament.

My Trip to the Bottom of the World: Antarctica
By: Trevor Allen
December 16, 2003-January 2, 2004
On the first day, I left Goose Bay and spent the night in St. John’s. From St. John’s we arrived in Toronto where I met the Students On Ice group, the company that holds this trip yearly. We all got together for a briefing and then went to the airport to head south.

Upon reaching Ushuaia, Chile, the most southern city in the world, we had our first boarding of the expedition ship M.V. Polar Star. It is an unbelievable vessel! We crossed the Drake Passage, which is the pathway to Antarctica, and made our first Antarctic visit at the Shettlon Islands. Once there we did daily Zodiac landings, some days up to 3 landings. We saw hundreds of thousands of penguins and hundreds of different whales.

In addition to the visits and sights, we had daily lectures which included global climate change, endangerment of species, treaties of the antarctic and it waters. I also had a chance to meet the President of Venezuela.

The experience was magnificent! I wish I could do it annually.!
