Grade 5 Heritage Fieldtrip
1999-2000

As part of  our Social Studies Program the grade 5 students of Norman's Cove Elementary took a trip to Cupids and Brigus in October, 1999.

Our first stop was in Cupids where we watched Mr.Bill Gilbert and his fellow archaeologists at work on the dig site of John Guy's colony, Cuper's Cove dating from 1610.

This stop also included a visit to the lab, to see how the artifacts from the site are catalogued, and to the museum in the same former schoolhouse building.

In the museum, not only are some of the artifacts on display, but also many items from the history of Cupids.  One exhibit we particularly enjoyed was "Present, Miss!", a model of a pre-Confederation classroom.  (Pre-Confederation means before Newfoundland joined Canada.)

From there we travelled to Brigus where we had a tour of  Hawthorne Cottage, the childhood home of Captain Bob Bartlett, and of the Stone Barn Museum with its varied displays.

We used our school's digital camera to take photos of many artifacts and other interesting things to share with others.  We hope you enjoy our photographic tour!
