Matthew's
Information On Cheetahs
The cheetah is a tawny coated, backstopped
cat (Acinonyx jabots), native to Africa and southwest Asia, the fastest
land animal, capable of running at speeds at 70 miles (113 k) per hour.
The average adult weighs 100 pounds (45 kg). Hunting has greatly reduced
their numbers. The cheetah has slender legs and claws that can't be drawn
in and hidden. In India full-grown cheetahs are sometimes captured in snares
to be tamed and trained as hunting animals. What they eat are antelope
and other land animals. The relatives of the cheetahs are lions, tigers,
jaguars, and leopards. The cheetah usually stalk their pray until they
are only several hundred yards away, then they spring forward and close
the gap in a whirlwind finish that the antelope are unable to match. When
the quarry (black buck or other antelope) is sighted. They can only maintain
their fastest speed for only a few seconds.
