Butterflies

Butterflies are beautiful bugs. They come out when it is sunny and they visit gardens full of flowers. They visit sweet smelling plants and flowers.
A butterfly's tongue is usually curled up under its head. The butterfly uncurls its tongue to drink the nectar that he/she gets from the flowers. The tongue is like a long tube. It then sucks the nectar from the flowers, through the tube and in his/her mouth.
A butterfly has feelers with little knobs at the end. They use the feelers to smell and taste things.
Male and female butterflies find each other by their sense of smell. Then when they meet each other, they mate on a leaf. The female butterfly lays her eggs on a leaf.  When the eggs hatch, tiny caterpillars come out of each egg. The caterpillars like to eat the leaves. They have strong jaws and can eat a lot.
The caterpillar grows but its skin does not. It then sheds its old skin. It has  grown a new one underneath. The caterpillar sheds its skin four times. After a month, it is fully grown. It then goes to a quiet place to change its shape. The caterpillar spin a thread from its tail to tie itself to a stalk. Its skin then turns hard. The caterpillar turns into a pupa or a cocoon. When it is inside the pupa, it turns into a BUTTERFLY! On a warm summer day the butterfly comes out of the pupa. His/her wings are still wet and crumpled. The butterfly finds a dry place for the sun to dry off its wings.
Most butterflies have colors on top of their wings. The bottom of their wings are usually dull, dark and ugly. This helps them to be camouflage.
There are thousands of different kinds of butterflies in the world.
They live in gardens, forests, grasslands and maybe there is one near you.
Some butterflies live in North America for the summer and when the winter comes they fly south. They does this for as long as they live. These butterflies are Monarch butterflies.
Some butterflies have colors on their wings to let the birds know that he/she is not very good to eat.
Many people get confused between butterflies and moths. A moth is similar to a butterfly but they have dull colors, their body is thicker and more hairy. Butterflies fly at day and moths fly at night.
Butterflies are lovely creatures. Even though they are bugs, they are still very pretty creatures. You wouldn't think that a bug can be so pretty? Most people hate bugs andthey can't stand to look at them. Butterflies are pretty bugs and most people think butterflies are beautiful bugs. Unlike moths because moths are ugly and they are very dirty. When you touch a moth your hand gets dirty. Butterflies a usually clean bugs because they try to keep clean all year round!
