Principal’s Message During these mid-winter months, school staff reflect on our learning as a community. Sacred Heart Elementary is currently in year two of a three year school development plan. Our school plan targets three core areas for school development; i. Fostering a positive school climate, ii. Promoting leadership opportunities for staff and students, iii. Improving student achievement in all curricular areas. All staff members work on individual development plans as well as being part of teams that implement strategies from our school development plan. Our February 21st professional development session affords us an opportunity to review our progress in implementing school development strategies. As such, there will be no school for students on this day. One of the earliest educational reformers John Dewey states, “We do not learn from experience, we learn from reflection on experience”. With respect to student learning, the staff at Sacred Heart is committed to reflection on how our school is doing “on the whole” and how we are doing as individuals.
Frank Humber Principal Please ensure your child(ren) are dressed with mitts and hats. Students go outside during recess and lunch as much as possible (weather being the determining factor). Also, we have already had incidents of busses being late for their morning runs (mechanical issues). Students may have to spend more time than anticipated on the bus stop. Keep them bundled up!
Our penny harvest has been
successful to date. Pennies for Peace is a service program designed to
broaden our students’ cultural horizons while teaching them about their
capacities as humanitarians - one penny at a time. Thanks to Ms. Grandy, Mr.
Matthews and Ms. Titterington and their students for taking the lead role on
this project. The amount a student gives to the cause is not of any
particular significance; the lesson learned is our focus. Pennies can be
brought in to your child’s homeroom teacher at any time. To promote this event, on Friday, February 4th, we will be hosting a Pennies for Peace Crazy Hair Day. Contribute pennies if you can. Prizes will be awarded to students with the craziest hair.
SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ELEMENTARY Each year we offer students in elementary grades the opportunity to experience extra activities as an extension to our Physical Education program. In January our grade four students started cross-country skiing; students in grade five will take part in a 10-week swimming program starting in the spring. Our grade six students will begin downhill ski lessons on Feb 25th and have their second session on March 4th. PRIMARY A similar life skill program for primary students begins in March. All Kindergarten and primary students will be going skating. Please remember that Kindergarten students must be supervised by an adult while at the Pepsi Centre.
Basketball School basketball teams have been practising hard the last couple of months and competing in tournaments. Eddie Joyce and Matthew Young are coaching the senior girls team, Doug Jewer coaches our senior boys, Andrew Humber and Robyn Barnable are coaching our junior boys team, while Audrina Parsons and Mrs. Young are coaching our senior girls team. So far this year our teams have been strong competition for all teams in the city. Congratulations to the senior girls team on their recent win at the J.J. Curling Invitational Tournament. The school appreciates the efforts of both the athletes and the coaches. Go Sabres!
After School Cross Country Skiing Ms. Payne, Ms. Skanes, and Ms.
Caines have agreed to be the teacher-sponsors for any elementary stud Professional Development On February 21st, school will be closed for students. Staff will be continuing our work on school development. Tuesday, February 22nd, will be Day Four of the school cycle. Sacred Heart School Council School Council has set its next meeting for February 10th. As always, if you have an item that you’d like to bring to Council, please contact the Chair, Bill Dennis, or the school to have your item tabled at the meeting.
Please note these reminders about student safety. 1. Drivers should not come on the school parking lot during morning drop–off or afternoon pick–up. 2. Morning student supervision begins at 8:00 am. Students are not permitted in the school before that time.
Family Literacy Day Play for Literacy Our recent literacy day was a success. Thanks to the teacher organizing committee for their efforts in planning a great day. Events in the classrooms, library, and gym, were designed around the theme Play for Literacy. Responses from students about the family game night were also encouraging. A few of the student responses are below: “On family game night we played Cranium. It is an awesome and totally fun game. I really like the cameo – when you act out something and your partner has to guess.” (Grade 2) “We played Monopoly. My Mom and Dad and I played a really long game. We are learning how to count money and follow the rules. It helps me learn how much things cost and how to manage money” (Grade 4) "Me and my Mom played a card game called solitaire and gin rummy; I beat my Mom 3 – 2. We also played MasterMind. Me and my Mom had lots of fun playing these games on family game night. (Grade 5)" Happy “February” Birthday to.....
