Chapter 5

Overall Media Choices

Figure 5.5 indicates the total media choices made in the vocabulary treatment. Collectively, the 13 participants looked up 289 media cues during the vocabulary test; 67 graphics, 80 videos, 59 definitions, 59 pronunciation and 24 ěPlay this pageî. While the most frequently consulted annotation was the video option, 28%, when graphics are included, visual annotations constituted slightly more than half of the total, at 51%. Auditory media, comprising the ěPlay this pageî and pronunciation options totaled 83, or 30% of the total. Textual definitions made up the difference, with approximately 20%.

Media Choices and Learning Style

Figure 5.6 shows the average number of selections of a particular medium by each group. The 8 visual students, 57% of the study population, made only 122 or 42% of the 289 options. Tactual learners made 79 options, or 27% of the total. The NP learner had 38 cues for 13%. Kinesthetic learners had 18% with 51 cues. The NP learner had the greatest use of graphic and pronunciation cues, the tactual group showed a preference for the video option, kinesthetic learners used the definitions most and videos least. With the exception of the video option, visual learners were the least prolific users of each of the different media. In the ěPlay this pageî selection, all groups were evenly distributed and every individual selected the option at least once.

Media Choices and Gender

Comparisons of the media choices according to gender are illustrated in Figure 5.7. The six girls made fewer media selections than the seven boys overall. However, Figure 5.8 shows that the girls favored definitions while pronunciation, videos and graphics were preferred by the boys.

Figure 5.8

The girls, who comprised 46% of the population, made 126 of the 289 selections, or 44% and the boys opted for 163, or 56%. Specific media selections for females and males followed a similar pattern of use. For example, females selected 28 of 67 pictures, 30 of 80 videos, 25 of 59 pronunciations, 32 of 59 definitions and 11 of 24 "Play entire page". Definitions were slightly elevated for girls at 54% of the total and videos were the least used at 38%. From this data, there does not appear to be any significant media preference in terms of gender.
