Chapter 4

Treatment Sessions

The 10 item multiple-choice vocabulary recognition pre-test on the non-glossed text (see Appendix 3) was administered on 29 September, 1999. A recall protocol (a written summary) followed two days later. The 10 item, multiple-choice vocabulary treatment, (see Appendix 4) dependent on the availability of the computer lab and student schedules, was carried out from the fourth to the seventh of October. The recall protocol assessment, again, when times permitted, was given anywhere from two to five days after the vocabulary treatment.

The 10 item multiple-choice vocabulary recognition pre-test, because it was not dependent on the QuickTime software, was conducted in the computer lab with the entire class in a single session. Each individual was assigned a computer and strategically separated such that no two students were sitting next to each other. A paper copy of the text and multiple-choice questions were given to each student. This text was also on the computer screen in front of them. Students were given the option to answer on paper or on computer. No time limit was specified. All students read and completed the vocabulary test within twenty five minutes with the first student finished in ten minutes.

The 10 item, multiple-choice vocabulary treatment post-test was carried out on groups of 2 and 3 over a four day period due to limitations on the availability of the QuickTime software and to facilitate the administration of the test. Otherwise, the same procedure was followed. The treatment, depending on the individual, took from 8 to 30 minutes to complete.

Learning preference results, GALT tracker data and individual and group multimedia choices as well as pre-test and treatment outcomes were coded on ClarisWorks spreadsheets.

To track individual media choices, the GALT software required that each student be allotted a nine digit identification number which was entered into the computer upon login. This distinguished one student from the other. However, to facilitate the creation of figures and tables, excluding Table 4.1, only the last two digits in the string were used for reporting purposes.
