The Jehovah's Witnesses

This religion was started by Charles Jaze Russell and a group of his Bible students. It's beginnings go back to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1872. Today there are over 2 500 000 active ministers for this religion. In Newfoundland there are 35 congregations.

In the Jehovah's Witness's religion, there is no difference between their clergy and the lay people. They believe that all members of the faith should be "witnesses" or "ministers". People of this faith are encouraged to read and know the Bible really well. They also get training in the public ministry. Once they have finished their training they are baptized in water. This is a symbol of being dedicated to Jesus. This is also the ceremony for ordaining ministers for this religion.

The Kingdom Hall is the place of worship for the Jehovah's Witnesses. The congregation meets here twice a week for lectures, questions, public speaking and Bible study. Children can do these classes right along with their parents.

The head office for this religion is in Brooklyn, New York. The official magazine for this faith is The Watchtower. It is printed in over 100 languages and is sent all over the world.

Jehovah's Witnesses are politically neutral. They give their allegiance only to God and his Kingdom.
