Some Ecology Terms

Acid Rain-- rain that picks up chemicals from polluted air and becomes acidic.

Adaptations-- changes in organisms to make them better able to survive in their environment.

Algae-- simple plants that live in water.

Atmosphere-- the invisible blanket of air that surrounds the earth.

Biome-- a major regional community such as the tundra, grasslands, or desert.

Biosphere-- life-sustaining regions of the earth.

Community-- all plants and animals living in the same environment.

Compost-- organic material that decomposes to return nutrients to the earth.

Conservation-- to maintain, restore, or preserve.

Consumer-- an organism that eats a living thing for energy.

Decompose-- to break down into basic elements.

Decomposer-- an organism that gets energy from decomposing materials.

Ecosystem-- communities interacting in their environment and functioning as a system.

Environment-- an organism's total surroundings.

Food Chain-- the order in which food energy is transferred through organisms, from plants to herbivore to carnivore.

Food Web-- a system of interconnecting food chains.

Habitat-- an environment where an organism lives.

Nitrogen-- a basic element found in the air, soil, and all proteins.

Nitrogen Cycle-- the transfer of nitrogen from the atmosphere into the soil and along the food chain.

Nutrient-- something that nourishes, repairs, or promotes growth.

Organic-- derived from a living organism.

Organism-- a living thing.

Oxygen-- the colorless, odorless, tasteless gas produced by plants.

Photosynthesis-- the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce glucose and oxygen.

Plankton-- drifting microscopic organisms found in water.

Population-- all living things of the same species living in one area.

Predator-- an animal who feeds on other animals.

Prey-- an animal hunted as food.

Producer-- an organism that makes its own food.

Topsoil-- surface soil containing most of the nutrients required for plant growth.

Water Cycle-- the circulation of the earth's water through evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and accumulation.
