TWO OF OUR ACTIVITIES

Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve has a number of activities to offer Grades 4-6 under its Environmental Education Program.  Entitled "Science in Nature's Classroom," the Reserve offers activities under Habitats, Diversity of Life, Weather, and Rocks, Minerals and Erosion.

Our Grade Six Classes participated in two activities that dealt with Habitats.  In an activity called "Web of Life," students learned to classify organisms according to their role in a food chain.  Students were able to explore interrelationships among organisms and identify the sun as the source for all energy.  In another activity called "Bird Watching," students learned to compare the external features and behavioral patterns of animals that help them thrive in different kinds of places.  Students were able to explain how organisms affect and are affected by their environment and list ways in which adaptations may help a bird survive in its habitat.
