The Ground Squirrel

The Ground Squirrel is a part of the " sub-family " Sciurinae.
The Ground Squirrel hibernates from September to May. They sleep in trees. They live in many parts of the world and in arid regions.

 Ground squirrel has a bushy tail. Their body ranges from 7 to 27 inches long { 18 to 69 centimetres } , including the tail. The fur is black, brown, grey, red or white  in colour and have light spots or stripes  on the upper part of their body. They have very thick coats of fur for the very cold climates.

The Ground Squirrel is an Omnivore. The eat seeds, nuts, leaves, bulbs, roots, mushrooms, insects, worms, eggs, small birds, and other small animals. They store food in their checks for the winter and months that food is scarce.

 This playful squirrel wrestles with others squirrels at the opening of the burrow. There is about thirty different species of Ground Squirrels in the world. The female Ground Squirrel may give birth to 4 to 12 young every spring. Their predators are: Weasels,   Fox, Hawks, Eagle, Lynx, Bear, Coyote.
