Tumbleweed is the popular name for several plants that grow in the prairie, plains, and deserts regions in the United States. The common tumbleweeds include the Russian Thistle and the Amaranth.
All tumbleweeds are annuals and have very strange life spans. Some could only live for a couple of months while others could live for a couple of years. Tumbleweeds blow freely and often pile up against barb wire fences and fill small gullies. As they move they scatter seeds and under the right conditions the seeds will grow into more tumbleweed.
A study has shown that tumbleweed is one of the most commonly used plants in movies and television. It is used to show lonely scenes in cowboy movies and can often be seen in the background.
